"Ashlynn Allred puts up a shot for Emery."

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports Writer

It was intense, it was the rivalry game, it was 2-A vs. 3-A and as it turned out for Emery, it was a good game. Last Thursday night at the Spartan Center, the Lady Spartans hosted the Lady Dinos from Carbon High and sent the Dinos home with a loss. Final score in this game was 40-32.
This was a crazy game as neither side shot the ball very well and both sides had more turnovers than their coaches probably would have liked but in the end, the talent of Emery gave them the win.
The game had a low scoring first quarter. The score at the end of the first quarter was 7-7. The score at the half was 18-14 Emery as the Spartans won the period 11-7. The third quarter was Carbon’s turn as the Lady Dinos outscored Emery 13-9 and the game was again tied at 27-27.
In the fourth quarter, Carbon had their first lead since the first quarter as they hit a regular field goal and led 29-27. Carbon scored on a three-point shot the next time down the floor and had the biggest lead of the game at 32-27.
Emery did not score in the fourth quarter until the 3:34 mark of the period when Bailey Rasmussen made a shot. With 3:00 left, Rasmussen went one for two at the free throw line and Emery was now down 32-30. With 2:11 left, Kelsie Cox made a pair of free throws and the game was tied at 32-32.
In the final two minutes of the game, Ashlynn Allred had a steal and a layup, Allred led a fast break, was fouled hard going to the basket and Carbon had an intentional foul called.
Allred made both free throws and Emery got the ball back. Hannah Dyer made a pair of free throws and Cox hit another pair and Emery got the win.
In the first half of play Emery went 7 for 14 at the free throw line, in the final quarter with the game on the line, Emery went 9 for 10. When it counted, the team stepped up, made the shots, made the plays and grabbed the win.
Rasmussen led the team in scoring with 13 points followed by Dyer with 9 points, Cox with 6 points, Allred with 5 points, Kambrie Hinkins with 5 points and Emily Olsen with 2 points.
Earlier in the week, Emery had hosted the Millard Lady Eagles and Emery coasted to an easy win. Emery won the game 55-30.
After trailing the Eagles by two points at 10-8 after the first quarter, Emery exploded in the second quarter for 25 points while holding their opponent to only 9 points and grabbed the lead at 33-19.
In the final period, Millard only scored 2 points as the host team dominated the period defensively.
Allred and Dyer scored a combined 15 points in the second period to lead the team to the comfortable lead. Those two plus Rasmussen went on to finish the game with 10 points each as they led the team in scoring for the game.
Ashton Bell scored 7 points, Cox and Patyn Jeffs each scored 5 points, Emily Olsen and Lexie Huntington each scored 4 points.
Bell led the team in rebounding with 8 while Cox led the team with 4 steals and 3 assists.
Emery will play Jan. 3 when they will travel to Roosevelt and play the Union Cougars.
Emery will play their final preseason game the following Tuesday when they host Parowan in Castle Dale.
