Last week the Green River Lady Pirates split their basketball games while the boys’ team won their lone game of the week. The Lady Pirates defeated Pinnacle 54-47 and then lost at Whitehorse 58-40 to the region 19 leading team. The Pirate boys’ team defeated Whitehorse by the score of 77-53.
With the boys’ team currently residing in second place in the region behind Monticello, they need to keep on winning to secure their spot in the 1-A state tournament that is quickly approaching. They will more than have their opportunity to help themselves this week as they play three region games, all on the road. Wednesday they travel to Pinnacle in Price and Friday and Saturday they make the long southern road trip as they will play at Monument Valley and Navajo Mountain.
Last week against Whitehorse Green River got off to a great start by winning the first quarter 23-7 and then built on their advantage throughout the game. Whitehorse won the second quarter 13-12 with the Pirates coming out ahead in each of the second half periods. The Pirates won the third quarter 21-17 and the final at 21-16 to secure the lopsided win.
Spencer Marshall was the leading scorer with 23 points with three other teammates scoring in double figures. Jon Mendez, the leading scorer for the season, scored 17 points followed by Chance Pfander and TJ Hughes with 10 points each. Nick Corrigan scored 8, Tyrell Shumway scored 5 and Corbin Mecham and Nathan Cox scored 2 points each.
Monument Valley is in third place in the region with Pinnacle in fourth place so a sweep this week by the Pirates will greatly aid their positioning in the region.
In losing to Whitehorse, the Lady Pirates gave up a big lead as Whitehorse outplayed Green River in the second half to secure the win. Green River won the first quarter 20-12 and the second 8-2 to lead at the half 28-14. The second half was all Whitehorse though. Green River was outscored 20-5 in the third quarter and 24-7 in the final period as the shots that were falling in the first half did not fall in the second.
Taylor Johnson was the leading scorer with 13 points followed by Sydney Thayn with 11 points. Kira Engleman scored 8, Robin Nelson scored 4 and Cassidy Bastian and Savannah Williams each scored 2 points.
Against Pinnacle, Green River went into the final period down 37-29 but won the fourth quarter 25-10 to get the win. Johnson scored 17 points and had 11 rebounds in this game to lead in team in both categories. Engleman scored 12 points and had 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals. Thayn scored 10 points, Nelson had 7, Presley Lovato had 6 and Bastian scored 2.
The Lady Pirates also travel to Monument Valley and Navajo Mountain this week. These are their only action of the week.
