Spring Glen, Utah-Gerald (Jerry) Huff Carter, 75, passed away March 15, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Spanish Fork, Utah on Feb. 11, 1939, to Elda Huff and Eldon Carter. He attended Spanish Fork High School and Snow College (Blizzard Tech). Served as a Machinist’s Mate in the United States Navy from 1957-60. He married JoAnn Lyman in Reno, Nevada on Oct. 12, 1961.
Jerry loved the four seasons; fishing season, pheasant season, deer season, and elk season. He enjoyed huntin’, four-wheelin’, Jeepin’, and boating, but he especially loved the time it allowed him to spend with friends and family. Jerry had a bad case of “tinker-itis”; if something was running well, Jerry could make it run even better and would spend hours, or even days or weeks, “planning his work and working his plan.” One of the most beautiful and productive vegetable gardens in the state could be found in Jerry’s backyard. He went to great lengths to make sure there was not a weed in it, and we often found him crawling on his belly to find and pick the perfect tomato. Family, friends, and neighbors had no need to plant a garden of their own as Jerry made weekly deliveries of his bounty.
Jerry and JoAnn owned and operated the Sky View Café and Garage in Spanish Fork Canyon for ten years from 1965-75. The business was successful, not just because they provided the best food and mechanic service around, but because of JoAnn and Jerry’s friendly, and often humorous, interactions with customers from far and wide. Jer had friends everywhere. We couldn’t take a trip any place without him bumping into someone he knew. Jerry loved bragging about his two sons and his four grandchildren. If you happened to ask how they were doing, you had better be ready to listen to Jer tell you just how great they were and what amazing things they were accomplishing.
We will miss him cocking his head to look at us, flicking his thumb toward us, and offering some sage advice that we knew we had better heed.
Survived by his loving wife JoAnn, sons Rodney Huff (Diane) of Castle Dale and Scott of West Valley, four grandchildren, one sister, four half-brothers, and one half-sister.
Preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Bob and Jay Elmer.
