Miss Emery Jaicelyn Shakespaere recently visited some of the schools in Emery County. She shared her platform with the students. Miss Emery’s platform issue is something very important to her.
She told the students she is currently attending college at BYU Idaho in Rexburg, Idaho, She is majoring in elementary education and would like to spend her career teaching children. Jaicelyn will be representing Emery County at the Miss Utah pageant in June in Salt Lake. Jaylynn Lindley is her Little Miss and will be accompanying her to the pageant.
Jaicelyn showed a video about her platform which is Families of SMA. SMA is a disease called spinal muscle atrophy. People suffering from SMA lose all use of their muscles, They can’t touch their toes, or jump or reach up.
“The reason I chose this platform is because of my cousin baby Mathis. He was diagonosed when he was six months old. He couldn’t do anything. He had Type I SMA which is fatal. The first day he was diagnosed his family was really sad. Then the next day they decided that baby Mathis would live life to the fullest. They filled out a hope list for him. The things they hoped they could do with Mathis before he passed away.”
Some of the things he did included wearing a mustache, going sledding, riding a horse, eat dippin dots, eatfrozen yogurt, make a slam dunk, graduate from high school, and go to Disneyland and have his picture with all the characters. He wore his Daddy’s championship ring and he drank Kool-aid.
The families of SMA organization helped the family to be able to go to Disneyland. They also bought him a car bed so he could travel safely lying down. All these things were funded by different people in their community.
“I didn’t know what this disease was until someone in my family was diagnosed with it,” said Miss Emery.
Miss Emery is conducting a fund raiser to collect money for her platform. She invited all of the students to contribute what they could to the project. All money raised will go to families of SMA.
Miss Emery performed the song, At Last which she will sing in June at the Miss Utah pageant.
Little Miss Jaylynn Lindley performed a dance routine at each of the schools. They also invited any girls who would like to be involved in the Little Miss Pageant or Miss Emery pageant to contact Jessica Lindley.
Anyone wishing to donate to Miss Emery’s platform issue can contact her for more information.
