"Lady Spartans celebrate their victory against the Lady Broncos from San Juan."

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports Writer

The Emery Lady Spartan volleyball team should finish the first half of the region volleyball season in a three-way tie for first place after two big wins last week. Emery defeated defending 2-A state champion and current number one ranked team San Juan on Tuesday evening at the Spartan Center in five sets and then traveled to Salina and defeated North Sevier easily in three sets on Thursday night.
Emery travels to winless Wasatch Academy this Tuesday night and should win that game while South Sevier will play North Sevier with the Rams the favorite in that game. If both teams win as expected they will join San Juan with 4-1 records at the conclusion of the first half of region 15 play.
Emery lost the first set against the Broncos 25-22 but played well and then the Spartans won the second set by the same score. After San Juan took the third set 25-18, the Emery team regrouped and came out and won the final two games 25-23 and 15-13 to defeat the Broncos. Emery played consistently the entire night and played probably their best game of the season.
One of the hardest things to do in sports is to win the game you should win after you have won a big game just prior to playing the second game. Coach Kris Bell kept her team focused though and they easily defeated North Sevier by the scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-11. As you can see, the Wolves were never a factor in this match and the Spartans did their best to keep them down.
On Thursday, Emery will begin the second half of region play as they will travel to Moab and face Grand High. Grand is perennially a good volleyball school and will be doing their best to avenge an earlier loss this season. The state tournament will be on Oct. 29-30 at Utah Valley University.
