As region 19 action begins, both Green River basketball teams are looking forward to playing well as they work at qualifying for the 1A state tournament coming up in just over a month. The Pirate boys team did not play last week but will face two region opponents this week. The boys will travel to Monticello on Tuesday night and then will travel to Monument Valley on Friday night.
The boys opened region play a week ago with a 73-24 win over Pinnacle. In that game four different Pirates scored in double figures and nine different players scored in the game. The Pirates possess a season record of 11-4 and would like to close out the season with a perfect region record.
Leading the way in the Pinnacle game was Chance Pfander with 16 points and he was followed by TJ Hughes with 13 points and Corbin Mecham and Tyrell Shumway with 11 points each.
Also scoring in the game were Nick Corrigan with 8 points, Jovani Flores with 6, Jon Mendez with 4, Jacob Cox with 3 and Freddy Escalante with 1 point.
The Lady Pirates are 5-9 for the season and 1-1 in region play after losing to Monticello last Saturday night by the score of 45-34.
Green River fell behind 14-5 in the first quarter and never recovered from that deficit. The Lady Pirates won the second half 18-17 but that was not enough.
Scoring in that game was led by Savannah Williams with 13 points.
Also scoring were Maribel Escalante with 6, Kira Engleman with 5, Presley Lovato with 4, Cassidee Moore with 3, Cassidy Bastian with 2 and Daniela Mendez with 1.
The Lady Pirates had defeated Pinnacle earlier to get their first region win. Engleman is the leading scorer this season with an 11.86 points per game average and Williams is right behind with a 9.26 average.
The Lady Pirates play at Monument Valley this Friday night.
