Letter to the Editor: Keep roads open on the San Rafael

By John L. Anderson Salt Lake City

I am totally against closing any more roads on the San Rafael Swell. To close additional roads makes as much sense as swatting a mosquito with a sledge hammer.
I was informed that roads that go to nowhere need to be closed and destroyed. The reason that a road was built in the first place was for a purpose. If a road hasn’t been used for several years it will deteriorate on its own from many flash floods. These floods occur every time that it rains. I have seen large boulders get washed down in some of the gulches.
I physically lived on the San Rafael Swell and have watched roads get totally washed out from the flash floods.
The intelligent solution is to leave the roads alone. They are valuable for ATV and motorcycle use. They also can be used for hikers. They are also valuable for tourist attractions, people like to follow a road to see where it goes.
It costs money and a lot of time to build a road. Every road has a purpose. It might not be used at the present time. Later on conditions could change and that unused road could become as necessary as it was in the first place.
When I lived on the Swell and we flew down we needed a flat road to land the small airplane on. You cannot land a plane in rough terrain.
If the BLM has a surplus of money it could be used to fix roads or saved for better purposes.
