Walking is great exercise, it doesn’t cost anything and you don’t need any specialized equipment. There are many health benefits to walking: it burns calories, slims your waist, strengthens your bones, lowers blood pressure, cuts cholesterol, reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes and other ailments. You can start out with a short 30 minute walk every day and build up to five miles a day Barbra Jones gave shopping tips for the month of March. Many stores have their case lot sales going on and it is a good time to save on canned goods. As Easter nears there are sales on ham, eggs, asparagus, corned beef, cabbage and strawberries. Potatoes are always on sale. You can get five or 10 pounds for .99 cents. You can serve baked potatoes for dinner and feed everyone for really cheap. You can be creative with your toppings, they may be as simple as salsa, sour cream and cheese. The possibilities are endless. Potatoes can be cooked in the microwave as long as you pierce them with a fork prior to cooking.
Jenny Mangum from Four Corners provided a pamphlet for everyone about underage drinking. She said if you can sit down for at least one meal a day with your children there is a lower risk for drug and alcohol use. Research shows teens who regularly eat as a family five to seven times per week are 33 percent less likely to use alcohol. Research shows 67 percent of teens who drink before age 15 will try illicit drugs. The younger a person starts to drink, the higher the risk of addiction. Those who start before age 13 have a 45 percent chance of becoming alcohol-dependant, compared to seven percent for those who wait until age 21. There are three tips for preventing underage drinking; bonding, staying close to your kids by spending time together and being supportive of your kids. Boundaries, setting clear rules and expectations for your kids. Monitoring, the who, what, when and where of their lives.
Jeff Ohlwiler from Pro Rehab gave some advice on stretching and exercise. He said you have to burn 3,500 calories to lose one pound. The average female should consume 1,600-2,300 calories a day. The average male should consume 2,000-3,000 calories a day. A medium slice of pizza is approximately 270 calories. It would take 70 minutes of walking to burn off the calories.
You should include aerobic exercise in your daily routine. You should be exercising at 65-70 percent of your maximum heart rate. To figure out your heart rate subtract your age from 200. If you were a 28 year old female your heart rate would be 172.
If you want to lose weight you must reduce your calorie intake. One of the best things you can do is to cut soda out of your diet. Soda has been linked to obesity, diabetes and other health related problems. Diet soda also has negative health effects. The best thing to drink is water. There are several helpful websites and apps to help you with your fitness and weight loss goals. Ohlwiler demonstrated some stretching techniques.
