The region 15 champion Emery High boys’ cross-country team participated last Wednesday at the 2-A Utah State meet held at Highland High School and Sugar House Park.
The Emery team, led by Chase Christiansen, finished first at the region meet held at North Sevier High School last week. Emery had five runners finish in the top nine spots.
The boys’ and girls’ cross country championship races were held on Oct. 21 at Sugarhouse Park and Highland High School for all five divisions of the UHSAA. Emery High participated in this meet and the boys placed second in state.
Erin Hurst, a junior at Emery High, was the lone girl participant in the race for the Spartans and Hurst ran well as she placed fifth with a time of 20:46.0. Anna Camp, a senior at Millard High won her third straight 2-A title as she edged a runner from North Summit High with a time of 18:48.
The Emery boys’ team finished second in the 2-A race behind champion Millard High School. North Summit High finished third and Delta High finished fourth.
Emery’s best finisher was freshman McKay Meccariello with a time of 17:46.5 and a finish of 12th place. Freshman Chase Christiansen was the next Spartan to finish as he ran the race in 17:53.2 and finished in 16th place. Emery sophomore Ty Funk was right behind in 17th place with a time of 17:59.3. Emery was the only school with three finishers in the top 17.
Sophomore Tanyon Allred was the next Spartan finisher as he ran the race in 18:24.1 and finished 32nd overall. The final Spartan scorer was McKoy Christiansen in 47th place with a time of 18:53.4.
Also running for the Spartans were Daryl Guymon, a junior, and Wyatt Cox, a senior. With two freshmen and two sophomores in the top four spots for the Spartans things look good for next season as Millard had two seniors in their top four finishers.
On the ladies side, only region 15 second-place finisher Erin Hurst traveled to the state meet as the girls failed to place at the region meet. Erin placed fifth overall at state. The Emery ladies have had a limited number of participants this season and have struggled throughout the year with team scoring. Only four other girls ran in the region meet for the Spartans.
The Emery boys’ grabbed the sixth through the ninth spots in the region meet as they all ran well. McKay Meccariello finished sixth with Ty Funk seventh, Tanyon Allred eighth and McKoy Christiansen ninth.
Also competing this season for the Emery boys were Daryl Guymon, Wyatt Cox, Lane Taylor, Jake Jensen, Walker Woolsey, Lance Chynoweth, Nathan Urie, Travis Fehlberg, Parker Stilson and Malone Moss.
Good luck to all the Emery runners as they prepare for next year’s running season. The team is coached by Kirk Robinson and Kristy Guymon.
