The Emery High Lady Spartan soccer team played in the first round of the 2-A state meet last week with a game at Maeser Prep and the Emery team returned home on the wrong side of a 8-0 score. Region 15, of which Emery is a part, battled region 16 in the first round of the playoffs and only region winner Manti was able to prevail. Grand lost to Summit 6-2 and Gunnison lost to American Leadership 6-1 as three region 15 teams went down to defeat. Manti defeated Providence 7-0 to advance to this week’s quarterfinal round.
The Emery High Lady Spartans need to be commended for their outstanding first season of play and for their accomplishment of making the state tournament their first year of existence.
The Spartan team this season was mostly underclassmen and only had three senior players so it should bode well for the future. It was a good first season and many more should follow.
In the semi-finals on Friday, Manti will play Maeser Prep and Millard will play Rowland Hall at Jordan High.
The state championship game was on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium. Millard was the victor of the state tourney with a win over Maeser Prep. 1-0.
