"The needed repair work was done at the Willson home in Elmo."

Kenneth and Lois Dorrell of Orangeville contacted Habitat for Humanity of Castle Country the Friday before Thanksgiving as their water heater broke and needed an emergency replacement. Even though our home repair program, A Brush with Kindness, focuses on exterior home repairs, an exception was made for the Dorrell’s due to the urgency of their situation. Through the A Brush with Kindness program, we found the Dorrell’s an affordable plumber willing to travel to Orangeville to replace their water heater in a timely manner. They had a new water heater the following Wednesday, and their gratefulness was evident when meeting with them. When asked if they had benefited from the program, they responded: “yes, it made us so happy now that we have warm water again.”
Stephen and Loretta Willson of Elmo have had shingles flying off of their roof with some traveling as far as half a mile.
Without a layer of protectives shingles, a roof will eventually leak, causing damage to both the exterior and interior of the house. Habitat for Humanity of Castle Country’s A Brush with Kindness program provided the Willson’s with the materials necessary to complete the roof. Unlike typical A Brush with Kindness projects, their sons and grandsons completed all of the labor themselves and installed the new roof Thanksgiving weekend. The entire family appreciated the ease and helpfulness of the program, quoting saying that “we could have not done it without you.”
We would like to thank the Sorenson Legacy Foundation, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, AmeriCorps, Wells Fargo, Rocky Mountain Power Foundation, Utah Association of Realtors, Union Pacific Foundation, and Magnuson’s Lumber of Castle Dale for their support. Without the support from these sponsors and donations from local residents and vendors, HFHCC would not be able to help people in need of repairs like Stephen and Loretta Willson

Habitat for Humanity of Castle Country has developed the new program called A Brush with Kindness which focuses on minor exterior home repairs to improve quality of life, durability, energy efficiency, and/or accessibility. ABWK aims to improve circumstances for moderate- to low-income and elderly homeowners in all of Carbon and Emery County. The projects are low-cost and are repaid through no-interest, affordable monthly payments. HFHCC relies on volunteer participation which strengthens the community. ABWK’s main goal is to eliminate all safety issues within the homes of qualified homeowners in Castle Country. Previous projects include exterior painting/siding, minor roofing repairs, stair/ramp accessibility, handrail installation, grab bar installation, door/window replacement, and landscaping.
HFHCC is a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization to which cash and in-kind donations are tax-deductible. Donations may be made by mailing checks payable to “HFHCC” to PO Box 724, Price, UT 84501.
