Last week the Emery High boys’ basketball team added to their season win total with two hard fought victories over a pair of 3-A teams with wins in Castle Dale. First the Spartans defeated North Sanpete on Wednesday night by the score of 54-50 and then on Saturday night the Spartans beat the Dinos by a score of 67-54.
Carbon and Emery battled evenly for three quarters until the Spartans made their free throws down the stretch and took a 44-40 lead after three quarters on their way to a 13-point win. Emery made 12 of 16 attempts in that final period as the Dinos fouled trying to get back into the game.
Emery led 32-26 at the half but only three Spartans had scored. Bowdie Jacobsen had 14 points, Koby Butler had 10 points and Beau Roundy had scored 8 points. In the third quarter Roundy and Kolton Butler had the only field goals while Jacobsen made four free-throws and Zac Jorgensen added a pair of foul shots. It was a very physical third period as the Richfield officials let things go a little.
In the final quarter of the game, Emery played their best ball of the night as they scored on 13 of 17 possessions while the Dinos only converted on seven of 18 which led to the loss.
Bowdie had a great game as he made 11 of 12 free throws in the game plus eight baskets including a pair of three-point shots to finish the game with 29 points and as importantly, he handled the ball against a good press and never turned it over. Koby finished with 17 points and Roundy scored 11 points as the three Spartan players with double digit scoring averages kept things going. Also scoring in the game were Bryce Dugmore and Easton Gordon with 3 points each and Jorgensen and Kolton with 2 points apiece.
Against North Sanpete, Emery led 14-11 after the first quarter and Koby Butler scored 6 points. Both teams scored 12 points in the second period and Emery led at the half 26-23. Butler added another pair of baskets to be the leading scorer at the half with 10 points.
North Sanpete outscored the Spartans 12-11 in the third quarter as they outscored Emery 6-2 in the final two minutes of the period. Kolton Butler made four free throws in the period to lead the team. The two teams battled pretty evenly throughout the final period as the Spartans outscored the Hawks 17-15 and escaped with a win against a good team.
Koby continued his hot shooting as he made three baskets and four free throws to finish the game with 22 points on 9 of 15 shooting. Koby also pulled down 18 rebounds, had a pair of steals and blocked a shot.
Kolton was next in scoring with 12 points and had 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 4 assists. Roundy scored 8 points, had 5 rebounds and blocked 6 shots. Jacobsen managed only 6 points but had 6 assists and Dugmore scored 4 points and Mitch Richarz scored 2 points.
Every point that the Spartans scored in this game were right at the basket as no outside shots went in. Koby Butler and Bryce Dugmore combined to make 11 of 17 shots in the game for a 65 percent rate. The rest of the team made just six of 32 shots for 19 percent shooting.
The Spartans will now start region 15 action this week as they will host Grand High on Wednesday night and then will travel to North Sevier on Friday night.
