Boyd served as a volunteer fireman in Huntington for several years and also worked as an EMT from 1978-1987. Boyd was active in the UEA, where he served as President of both the Emery County and Southern Utah Education Associations. Boyd and Larraine served together as delegates to the NEA Convention.
