Six drug arrests in two days in Emery County

By PATSY STODDARD Editor

On Monday afternoon Feb. 29 at approximately 4 p.m., Sgt. Brook Smith from the Emery County Sheriff’s Office observed a truck going by driven by a man with an active warrant. He followed the vehicle and was able to make a traffic stop by the Emery High School. Mick Chaffin, the person with the warrant was arrested as well as Troy Parmar, who was on probation and Holly Monson a person with no criminal history.
Officer Smith said they found a meth pipe in the vehicle. Adult Probation and Parole Officer James Weaver came to the scene to talk to Parmar who was on probation. He put the probationer on a 72 hour hold. Found in the vehicle was two grams of methamphetamine which is enough for distribution, some was found in a separate package.
The two males tried to hide the drugs on the female, expecting the officers would not search the female. All three occupants of the vehicle were arrested and taken to the Emery County Sheriff’s Office for booking. The female was released on her own recognizance after she appeared in court. Chaffin was arrested on the warrant for retail theft out of Carbon County. Sgt. Smith said Chaffin is well known to the deputies and has been in and out of trouble.
Charges at the traffic stop include: possession of meth with intent to distribute, and obstruction of justice and possession of paraphernalia. Charges may be enhanced because an activity was going on at the high school during the time of the arrests.
In a second incident on Tuesday, Jason Tong did not appear for a court sentencing. Judge Harmon immediately issued three no-bail bench warrants against Tong. The sheriff’s office got word that Tong might be in the low income apartments number four in Ferron.
Deputy AJ O’Neil went to the front door and Sgt. Smith went to the back door. Deputy O’Neil made contact with the apartment renter, Debra Glaze. She allowed the deputies to search the apartment. Deputies found Jason Tong hiding in the kitchen pantry along with Robert Bloomer, who is on probation with AP and P.
The suspects were detained. During the arrest, a green glass pipe was spotted on a shelf. Deputies obtained a search warrant. Deputy Blake Gardner came to the apartment with the drug dog. The drug dog made indications of a pipe in the apartment and meth and marijuana were found in the apartment. The three suspects were arrested. Officers Smith, O’Neil, Boe Minchey and the detectives were involved in the arrests and the obtaining of the warrant. Judge Harmon approved the search warrant.
Sgt. Smith said Tong was well-known to the officers. Charges from the apartment arrests include: possession of paraphernalia, possession of meth, possession of marijuana and probation violations.
These arrests took place right across the street from the school.
Emery County Sheriff Greg Funk said it was a real team effort by the sheriff’s office deputies to get these drug dealers off the streets. He would like to thank the officers for their hard work in these arrests.
