Emery softball splits games opening week: attends St. George tourney

The Emery High Lady Spartans opened their 2016 softball season last week with a home game versus the Carbon Dinos and an away game versus the Summit Academy Bears. Emery split those games as they lost to Carbon and the came home with a road win. Emery lost to Carbon 16-4 and won at Summit Academy 15-7.
At Summit Academy, emery scored twice in the first inning and once in both the second and third innings. Summit Academy scored six times in the bottom of the third to lead 6-4. Emery responded by adding four runs in the fourth inning and seven runs in the sixth inning while limiting the Bears to just a single run in the bottom of the sixth.
Shaylee Jewkes and Kelsey Reeve each had four base hits in the game with Reeve hitting a double and a triple. Bailey Huggard had five RBI’s in the game and Reeve added four. Addy Healy hit a homerun for the Lady Spartans.
Huggard pitched the entire game for the Emery team and Bailey gave up eight base hits and struck out seven batters.
Against Carbon, the Dinos scored twice in the first inning, once in the second, four times in the third inning and then closed out the game by coring nine times in the fifth inning. Emery managed one run in the second inning, two in the fourth inning and then one more in the fifth inning.
The Lady Spartans will open region play this Tuesday with a game at Grand High in Moab and then will travel to St George this Friday and Saturday to play in a tournament there.
The Emery High Lady Spartans traveled to St. George and played five softball games over two days at the Fields of Little Valley softball complex last weekend. On Friday Emery defeated Summit Academy 24-20 and lost to Hurricane 18-3 and Highland High 14- 13. On Saturday Emery lost to Morgan 16-6 and defeated Millard 17-10. The winning pitcher in both of the wins was Bailey Huggard. Also pitching over the two days were Shaylee Jewkes, Jacie Huntington, Kaytlyn Farley, Ashlun Clark, Madison McCandless and Ambree Bennett.
Against Highland, Huggard and Jewkes hit homeruns, Huggard, Addy Healy, Jayla Weston and Emily Ussery had doubles. Huntington, Healy, Huggard, Jewkes and Morgann Donaldson had base hits for singles.
Against Hurricane, Weston hit a homerun and Huntington had two singles and Jessica Mason, Kelsey Reeve, Jewkes, Healy and Carlie Robinson all had one.
Against Summit Academy, Emery had 21 base hits with Weston hitting a triple, a double and a single. Huntington, Mason, Larissa Thompson all had doubles with Reeve hitting a pair of doubles. Huggard had four singles, Donaldson had three, Mason and Healy each hit two and Reeve and Thompson all had one.
Against Morgan, Mason, Huggard and Weston each hit a double with Mason, Healy and Regan Rasmussen each hitting two singles and Huntington, Huggard and Thompson each hitting one.
In the final game against Millard, Emery had 15 basehits with Healy leading the way with a double and two singles.
Also hitting singles were Reeve, Huggard, Healy and Maycee Ewell each hitting two and Huntington, Mason, Jewkes, Thompson, Weston and Robinson each hitting one. Emery has a single game this week, a game at home on Wednesday afternoon against Altamont.
