Emery County has become the victim of a scammer. An email came into the Emery County Treasurer’s Office requesting the county send $38,000 to a consulting firm in Florida. County Treasurer Steven Barton thought the request was coming from Commissioner Keith Brady as his name was on the email. Barton wire transferred the money to the bank in Florida.
The incident is under investigation by the Emery County Sheriff’s Office and the Emery County Attorney’s Office.
Emery County has a policy and procedure for paying bills, this policy was not followed in this case.
It is uncertain at this time if any of the money can be recovered. More information will be forthcoming as it becomes available.
