On Oct. 14 the Emery High Spartans concluded the 2016 football regular season with a region loss at the hands of the Juan Diego Soaring Eagles in Draper. Final score of the game was 38-7 as the Eagles scored on three of their five possessions in each half of the game. With the loss the Spartans finished fourth in the 3-A North region behind Morgan, Juan Diego and Grantsville.
Juan Diego received the opening kickoff and went three and out and had to punt. Emery then started their first drive of the game at their 38-yard line and put together a 14-play drive that ended with an interception at the Juan Diego 16-yard line.
Juan Diego then scored their first touchdown of the game on their next drive and took the lead that they never gave back.
Emery missed a field goal attempt on their second to last drive of the game and the Eagles then fumbled on their next series giving the ball back to the Spartans.
Emery then put together a seven-play 37-yard drive and scored on a pass play from Zach Jorgensen to Tel Gardner. Ethan Winter kicked the extra-point giving the Spartans their only score of the game.
Jorgensen completed eight of 18 passes for a total of 89 yards.
Derek Justice was the top receiver with 3 catches that totaled 20 yards. Kobe Faimalo caught two passes for 6 yards.
Kolton Butler caught a pass for 37 yards, Easton Gordon caught one for 16 yards and Gardner caught the other for 10 yards.
Gordon was the leading rusher in the game with 34 yards gained on six carries. Kacey Jones gained 29 yards on eight carries, Gardner gained 25 yards on seven carries, Faimalo gained 24 yards on six carries and Logan Cox gained 20 yards on 10 carries.
Emery is off last week with a bye and the Spartans will face the winner of the 3-A South region, Juab, in the quarterfinals of the 3-A Utah State tournament. That game will be played in Nephi at Juab High School on Friday Oct. 28 at 5 pm.
