Mayor Roger Swenson opened the Orangeville City Council December meeting and after taking care of several business items on the agenda introduced Megan Nelson of Cottonwood Elementary School for an award.
Megan Nelson was singled out from all the students at Cottonwood Elementary School for the Mayors Award. Megan’s whole family came to see Megan receive her Mayors Award of 50 dollars. Megan’s classroom has also received a $50 award. Megan was selected from 11 other students nominated by the school for this award. This Mayors Award is given to encourage all students to do good things in the school and community. The Mayor said Megan stood out because, she had in a mature way, helped another student.
The Mayor said he was proud of Megan and she serves as an example for all the students in Cottonwood Elementary School.
Mayor Swenson thanked all of those that participated in making the Orangeville City Christmas Chili dinner and Christmas Party successful like Councilwoman Janet Tuttle and Drew Leroy of Food Ranch to name a few.
The Orangeville City Council approved Travis Tuttle to become the new Animal Control Officer in Orangeville. Travis Tuttle will be sworn in to this job at the January Orangeville City Council meeting.
The Council rejected the Emery County Commission’s Emergency Medical Services agreement, sent to the cities, based upon a letter from David Church the city Attorney. The council felt this service should be part of the Emery County Sheriffs office and not tied to each city. It was stated that very few cities in Emery County are in favor of this EMS agreement because of several issues with the agreement. It would appear that the County Commission has moved ahead with this agreement without getting the consent of the cities in the county. A letter will be sent to the county commissioners stating the Orangeville City Council’s concerns.
Nelco Contractors of Price has been selected as the contractor for the installation of the Welcome Park Restroom and Shower. Nelco was the only contractor that bid on the project out of the three asked to bid. Their bid was for $129,000 after negotiations to cut costs the price was reduced to 108,900.
The total cost of this project will now be $226,000. For this project Senator David Hinkins was able to secure funds from the Utah Legislature.
The Orangeville City Council approved Nancy Jewkes and Mindy Nicholson as part time employees for services rendered last year to the city.
The city council approved bonuses for the full time Orangeville City employees $200 and for the part time employees $100.
Allen Childs Planning and Zoning reported the Orangeville Cemetery is filling up and needs to be enlarged. He suggested expanding burial space to the North and West of the existing cemetery.
