The Huntington City Council met for their monthly meeting last Wednesday evening at the Council chambers. Mayor Hillary Gordon announced in the meeting that she is not running for re-election for the mayor’s position after her term expires at the end of the year. This year’s sign-up period will be the first part of June for those seeking election to either the mayor’s position or for one of the council positions that will also be up.
Mayor Gordon announced the Council assignments for this year with all assignments staying the same. Mark Justice will be over streets, the rodeo grounds, planning and zoning. Laneea Cowley is over the youth city council, beautification and Easter events. LaMar Guymon is over parks and recreation, serves on the county recreation board and the annual turkey trot event.
Joe Ward is over the cemetery, the fire station and the Christmas party for the city residents. Leonard Norton is over animal control, CERT, the dumpster site, LEPC and the crossing guards. All councilmen will assist with Heritage Days.
The Council approved new business licenses for two businesses. Nicole’s Place is opening at 115 N. Main and JN Auto is opening a store specializing in guns and accessories. This will be located by the dealership.
The Council is working on an ordinance requiring the removal of snow off of sidewalks located on individual’s property. The ordinance likely will also require that each resident keeps any snow that falls on their property on their property and not push it onto city property. The ordinance also will require that residents that push snow on city streets keep any piles of snow away from intersections.
During the Council reports, Councilperson Cowley announced that the Valentine Carnival will be held at Huntington Elementary on February 3. If anyone has questions please contact Patsy Stoddard.
City snow plowing and removal was a discussion on how to do it better as the end of last year and the beginning of this year has seen above normal amounts of snow fall on our city streets. The employees plowed the snow to the middle of the road on 100 West as an experiment and may do it that way in the future, not this year as the current piles are already frozen.
If that occurs, residents will have to be vigilant about moving cars and trucks off the road every time the snow falls. The Council also considered hiring snow removal done.
