Unlike the poem Casey at the Bat by Ernest Lawrence Thayer in Price and
in Carbon County last Friday night, there was joy in the town.  Casey had
not struck out but instead the Carbon Dinos had defeated the Emery
Spartans on the football field.   Carbon had won 16-9.
The Dinos last win in this series occurred in the year 2000 and the Dinos were primed to not let this slip away.  They did exactly what it was they needed to do this night to win this game.  It was homecoming also so the stands were full of Carbon faithful and the team made sure they were not denied the celebration after the game that included fireworks.
Carbon scored first in the game as the kicker #5 Chris Sunter kicked a
27-yard field goal towards the end of the first quarter of play and that
was how the quarter ended with Carbon up 3-0.  Emery started their next
series at their 33-yard line, picked up 7 yards on first down, zero yards
on second down and then a pitch by the Emery quarterback to the Spartan
running back was swatted away by Dino defensive end Collin Lewis at the
35 yard line and Lewis picked up the loose ball and ran those 35 yards to
the end zone and Carbon led 9-0 after the extra point kick was missed.
Emery managed to get on the scoreboard on their next series as #90 Brock Winter kicked a 40-yard field goal after the Emery drive stalled in
Carbon territory.  Carbon led 9-3.  On Emery’s very next offensive
series the Spartans failed to gain a first down, went to punt and the
punt was blocked by #87 Chance Lecheminant and the Spartans were able to down the ball at the 15-yard line but the ball now belonged to the Dinos.
The Dinos had first and ten at the Emery 15 yard line and several plays
later Lewis took the handoff at the 3-yard line and scored for the second
time in the game and the extra point was good and Carbon led 16-3.
Emery returned the ensuing kickoff to the 45-yard line and eventually
scored on a pass play that covered six yards.  Emery went for two after
the touchdown and the pass was deflected and Carbon now led 16-9.  That
was the score at the half.
In the second half both teams had the ball four times.  Emery fumbled
once, missed a 47-yard field goal attempt once and turned the ball over
on downs twice.  Carbon through one interception turned the ball over on
downs twice and then had the ball as the game ended.  Nobody was able to do anything in the second half.
Carbon won 16-9 and now will travel to Grantsville this Friday night to
face the Cowboys in another 3-A North region contest. Emery will travel to Morgan on Friday.
