As the youth who have participated in 4-H for the 2006 year entered the room, a slide show was playing which showed many photos which had been taken during the year at the many activities sponsored by 4-H. Dennis Worwood said, “This night is to celebrate your accomplishments.”
The first awards he presented were recognition certificates to the leaders. There were many first year leaders, and several others received five year pins. Doris Wilson received her 20 year leader pin.
After the leaders awards, Worwood began to hand out the awards for the 4-H students for the year. He gave many first year certificates, and one person, Taryn White, was given a four year pin. Worwood announced that several people have earned their 10 year pins, but many have gone off to college and were not present to accept the awards.
The portfolio awards were given. A portfolio is the 4-H record book of a student’s activities during the year. A person has the option to use a binder style book or put the portfolio on a CD. The winners in the junior division were: first place- Sidnee Conder; second place-Jorgen Allred; and third place, Allie Sorenson. In the intermediate division, the winners were: first place Jacob Tuttle; second place was tied- Mindi Luke and Camie Whittle; and third place Mandi Langston. For the senior division, the winners were: first place-Cade Whittle; second place-Maegan Luke; and third place, with another tie, was Melissa Toomer and Markie Rudman.
John Conder was given an award for going to the state competition. He competed in the ninth-12th grade age group in the horse and shooting.
The youth who attended the national competition in West Virginia this year were recognized. They were Jacie Fasselin, Tawny Conder, Cade Whittle, Caleb Jones and Whitney Jensen. They competed in forestry and did very well. This year the national competition in wildlife habitat is being held in Cedar City.
Tyson Benson was recognized for taking first place at the horse 4-H competition in the two handed division. Mandi Langston won first place for individual showmanship.
Caden Worwood was given a swine pin for his participation in the SouthEastern Utah Junior Livestock Show held in Ferron. He won reserve grand champion with his entry.
Each of the leaders were welcomed to speak to the group. Everyone of the leaders stated that the kids in their group were the most talented, and each is looking forward to beginning again.
Christine Jensen explained that during the summer months, 10 different mini classes were offered to young people who were not involved with horse 4-H or the stock show. “We will definitely do this again. Five of these kids won rosettes at the county fair. I want to encourage all the 4-H kids to enter something into the fair. These are great kids and it has been a fun summer. It has been a blast,” Jensen concluded. “I also want to thank Cassie Jensen for teaching the kids how to crochet.” Cassie was awarded the outstanding 4-H leader of the year. The outstanding club of the year was given to the Dandy Cake Decorators, and the outstanding community service went to The Patriots.
Every young person in 4-H who exhibited items in the county fair won premiums along with the ribbons they received at the fair.
Three of the 4-H students who excelled this year were Spencer Fehlberg, Jacob Tuttle and Elizabeth Foote. Wells Fargo gives $50 savings bonds to excellent 4-H people in Utah. Emery County did very good to have three of their young people win a savings bond.
In a final award of the evening, Worwood and Jensen handed out flashlights to each of the leaders.
