Lacey Montgomery slides into second.

After going undefeated in preseason softball action, the Emery High Lady Spartans found region play to be as tough as they thought it would be. Emery finished the first half of region action with a 2-3 record last week after defeating Delta at home and losing to Juan Diego on the road.
Emery started region play by hosting perennial region title challenger North Sanpete and lost the game 10-1 as the Hawks scored seven times in the last inning. Carly Anderson had two of Emery’s five hits and had the only RBI, as she knocked in Brandee Wilson, who had doubled, with Emery’s only score in the first inning.
Emery traveled to Granite and lost 3-0. Granite is a team composed of nine seniors who also play together as a traveling team in the summer and stayed together for this last season of Granite High sports. Singles by Chelsea Skinner and Leslie Lake were Emery’s only hits in the game.
Emery then got their first region win of the season with an 8-2 victory at Carbon. Jalee Jensen scored in the first inning after having singled to start the Emery scoring. Emery scored two more runs in the second inning as Malorie Quick and Leslie Lake both scored. Lake and Wilson then scored in the sixth inning to give Emery a 5-2 lead. Emery scored three more runs in the seventh inning as Quick, Skinner and Lake scored. Wilson and Eve Guymon each had three hits in the game.
In the first good weather game of the season, Emery defeated Delta at home by a 5-2 score. Guymon led the way with three hits in three at bats, scored two runs and had one of Emery’s only extra base hits, a double. Guymon scored Emery’s first two runs in the first inning and the fourth inning. Jensen and Wilson each scored in the fifth inning and Lacey Erickson scored in the sixth inning for the final run. Anderson also had a double in the game. Delta scored their only runs in the sixth inning.
Emery then traveled to Juan Diego and lost a heartbreaker 3-1. Juan Diego is an interesting school. It is basically new, they have students from almost every state and lots of foreign countries. Their dress is dress pants and skirts and white shirts. The students do homework or get expelled and they have a waiting list to get in. Students at this school are students first and athletes second. It is kind of impressive.
Juan Diego scored first as they picked up a run in the second inning after a pair of singles and a fly out to right field. Emery tied the score in the fourth inning as Jensen scored after having singled. Wilson had a sacrifice bunt and Anderson singled to get the run batted in. Juan Diego scored twice more in the sixth inning to end the scoring. Haylie Hansen had Emery’s only other hits in the game as she singled twice. Hansen has finally returned to the field after missing months with a leg injury.
Emery begins second half region action this Thursday with a game in Mount Pleasant against the Hawks. They host two games the following week on Tuesday and Thursday.
