Ruth Nelson
WELLINGTON – Leah Ruth Thayn Nelson, age 78, passed away Jan. 9, 2006 in Provo.
She was born April 6, 1927 in Wellington to Azell W. and Inez Rich Thayn. Married Rex Workman Oct. 16, 1942 in Price; he died June 15, 1966. Married Harold Wise Nelson Nov. 24, 1963 in Elko, Nev.; he died Aug. 5, 2002.
Ruth was a loving wife and mother who raised three girls, five boys, and numerous grandchildren. Her home was always open to family, friends or anyone who just needed a place to call home. She enjoyed dancing, dining out and spending time in the outdoors. During her working years she worked as a secretary, many of these years was with the Sperry Rand Corporation. Ruth also worked alongside her daughter as a secretary and bookkeeper for J&R Waste, a business that they started together. She will be dearly missed by her family and a community of friends.
Survived by three daughters and four sons, Linda (Art) McKinnon, Lindon; Judy (Benny) Darling, Price; Shanna (Phillip) Larsen, Salem; Mike (Melanie) Nelson, Price; Bret Nelson, Price; Scott (Terry) Nelson, Veneta, Ore.; Jim (Robyn) Nelson, Wellington; five sisters and two brothers, Azella Bradley, Dea W. (Colleen) Thayn, Dawna Oviatt, Jess (Renee) Thayn, all of Wellington; Connie (Blair) Erickson, Huntington; Eva (Max) Tucker, Elmo; Ora Keel, Wellington; 28 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Preceded in death by parents; son, Kevin; brothers, George, Dell, Lynn and Harold; and great-grandson, Aaron Mabbut.
Funeral service was held Sat., Jan. 14, 2 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family was at Mitchell’s Saturday one hour prior to service. Interment, Wellington City Cemetery.
Laura Chidester
“Together Again”
PRICE- Laura Hastings Chidester, age 88, passed Jan. 13, 2006 at Park Dale Care Center in Price.
She was born Oct. 30, 1917 in Joseph, Utah to John and Lois Baker Hastings.
Married Clin J. Chidester, March 30, 1935 in Price; he died April 27, 1996.
Member of the LDS Church. Laura was a longtime resident of Carbon County, where the family owned and operated Chidester Sand and Gravel. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors and gardening. Her greatest love was for her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survived by her son, Carl (Mary) Chidester, Helper; grandsons, Lynn Chidester, League City, Texas; Mark (Angela) Chidester, Memphis, Tenn.; Bart (Stephanie) Chidester, West Valley; granddaughter, Cathy Rykowski, Placentia, Calif.
Preceded in death by parents, son, Rodney J. Chidester; one brother and four sisters.
Funeral service, Weds., Jan. 18, at 2 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Tuesday evening from 6-7 p.m. and Wednesday one hour prior to service. Interment, Price City Cemetery.
Arthur Brent Childs
1945-2006
Arthur Brent Childs was born on March 23, 1945 in Standardville (Carbon County). Died of natural causes at his home on Wed., Jan. 11, 2006.
Born to Regina Anderson Childs and Owen Childs. He grew up in Carbon County and later moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from Granite High School in 1964 and married Patricia M. Osborne in the same year, later divorced. He owned and managed his family bakery with his brother Dean. Later on he became a carpenter building homes and commercial buildings throughout the Western United States. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping with his family and raising and riding horses, boating and water skiing. He will be missed by all who loved him.
Survived by his son, Allen Brent (Julie) Childs, LaGrande, Ore.; daughter, Desiree Dawn (Guy) Christiansen, Bountiful; sister, Connie (Leon) Christensen, Huntington; sister-in-law, Lajuana Childs, Ferron. He had six grandchildren. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by son, Robert Dean Childs; brother, Dean Childs and parents. We love you Dad and hope to see you again some day.

Emma Sotherland
Emma “Floyd” (Quayle) Sotherland was born May 1, 1926, in Columbia, Utah and died Jan. 7, 2006, at home in Kearns. She passed away after a seven month battle with abdominal cancer. Her husband, Dennis, remained at her side, caring for her with the assistance of IHC Hospice, throughout her illness.
She graduated from the University of Utah with a Masters Degree in Education, and she worked in the Salt Lake area for a number of years as a special education teacher before retiring. She loved her work with special needs children, square dancing, sewing, traveling, the LDS church, and spending time with her two nieces, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis J. Sotherland; a brother, Willis D. Quayle, his wife, Darolyn of Seattle, Wash.; a daughter, Toma A. Nisbet, her husband Richard “Rick” of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a son Terry W. Alger, his wife Pat, of Clayton, Calif.; a son Kim N. Alger, his wife Cindy, of Kirby Oreg.; two nieces; one grandnephew; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held on Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. at the Kearns Seventh Ward Chapel, 4270 West 5700 South, Kearns.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Redwood Memorial Mortuary and Cemetery.
Friends may contribute, in her name, to IHC Hospice, the Kearns Seventh Ward or a charity of their choice.
Hazel Stimac
PRICE/CONCORD, Calif. – Hazel E. Stimac, age 93 of Price, passed away Tues., Dec. 27, 2005 in Concord, Calif., while visiting her daughter and family during the Christmas holidays.
She was born Sept. 22, 1912 in Simms, Mont., to Chris and Alice Baker Crabtree. Hazel graduated from the University of Montana and then began teaching school in the Great Falls, Mont., area. She generally taught in one-room schoolhouses, combining first through 12th grades. She married Frank Stimac on April 20, 1934 in Great Falls, Mont., he preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 1990.
Hazel and Frank moved to Utah during the 1940s where Hazel worked rearing their three children and made a warm and welcoming home. The family settled down in Dragerton in 1949, where Hazel worked for the Dragerton Hospital with Dr. Colombo and for U.S. Steel up until her retirement. During her retirement she and Frank traveled throughout the United States finally taking up residence in California.
Hazel returned to Price last summer with prior residence in Fort Collins, Colo. She loved time with her family, as well as others. Hazel was a gregarious mother, you always knew she loved you. Wherever she lived, Hazel tried to attend the Methodist Church. She was a member of Naomi Chapter 13 Order of the Eastern Star. Her faith in God was very important to her.
She is survived by daughter, Sharon Hupp, Concord, Calif.; sons, Ronald Stimac, Santa Barbara, Calif.; Jon Stimac, Fort Collins, Colo.; six loving grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren
A celebration of life was held Sat. Jan. 14, 2 p.m. at the Price United Methodist Church. Family was at the church Saturday one half hour prior to service. Interment, Price City Cemetery, under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
Richard Larsen
LAWRENCE – Richard (Dick) LaMar Larsen, age 75, passed away at his home in Lawrence on Jan. 9, 2006.
He was born Aug. 28, 1930 in Price to O’Dell and Lucille Ewell Larsen. Married Catherine (Cathy) Farnes on Jan. 26, 1949 in Salt Lake City.
Survived by loving wife of 57 years, Cathy Larsen, Lawrence; children, Colleen (Paul) Gotberg; Venice (Norbert) Kula; Darlene (Bob) Starley; Monty (Cheresa) Larsen; sisters, Marilyn (Tom) Godfrey; Dixie Kirgan; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Kenneth and Chad Larsen; and sister, Shirley Carpenter Hoge.
Funeral service was heldSat., Jan. 14, 10 a.m., at Huntington 5th LDS Ward Chapel, located at 115 S. 400 East. Family was at the church in Huntington Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday one hour prior to service. Interment, Huntington City Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home of Price.
Gertrude Johnson
KENILWORTH – Gertrude Johnson, age 92, passed away peacefully Jan. 9, 2006 at her son’s home in West Jordan.
She was born May 26, 1913 in Sunnyside to Ernest and Annie Richards Lloyd. Married Rex Marsh June 1936; Rex passed away Sept. 1942. Married George A. Richards in 1943; George passed March 23, 1975. Married Allen D. Johnson April 28, 1978 in Kenilworth; Allen died Aug. 22, 2001.
Active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in various callings throughout her life. Gertrude made more than 100 baby quilts over the last three years of her life that she donated to the church for the humanitarian programs.
She taught elementary education for several years, before becoming a homemaker and a mother. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Price Rocky Mountain Hospice and Salt Lake Rocky Mountain Hospice for their loving care they expressed to Gertrude and her family, and a special thanks to all the friends and neighbors for the loving care and concern.
Survived by one daughter, four sons and their spouses, Peggy (Ross) Christensen, Edinburgh, Scotland; George (Diane) Richards, West Jordan; Mike (Valerie) Johnson, Price, Kevin Johnson, Long Beach, Calif.; David (Diana) Johnson, Price; daughter-in-law, Nance Johnson, Castle Dale; 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; daughter, Rebecca DeRose; son, Evan Johnson; grandson, Jared; brother, Ernest; and sisters, Leah and Doris.
