Despite low participation numbers and the region meet being held in Delta, the Emery Spartans did themselves proud with their effort last week. The Emery boys finished in second place and the Emery girls finished with two region champions and three second places as they finished in fourth place. The boys scored 76 points to sneak past Delta by three points and lost to Juan Diego by only 12 points. Carbon was fourth with 54 points and North Sanpete came in last with 42 points.
For the girls, North Sanpete took the championship with 98 points followed closely by Delta with 95 points. Juan Diego was third with 74 points, Emery had 51 points and Carbon was last with 13 points.
Emery only had 20 boys participating in the meet while the girls had even less than that. Juan Diego brought between three to four times as many participants as the Spartans and host Delta always brings what appears to be the whole school to region. The only problem with Delta is that they all do not always show up for the state meet.
“We have one of the smallest teams this season that we have ever had here at Emery,” said Coach Darrell Gardner, “we took only 20 boys to the region meet compared to those that brought many times that amount. I am really proud of how well they responded.”
For the girls, they will only be sending four girls to the state meet. Camille Fehlberg won the 200-meter dash and the 300 hurdles and took second in the long jump. Camille scratched on a jump that was more than a foot longer than any she had that counted. Jodi Robertson also had a very good day, as she took second in the 100-meter dash, third in the 200-meter dash and third in the long jump. Madison Jensen finished second in the high jump and Rebekah Bott finished fourth in the 3200 meter run.
Tyler Killpack had a good day as he won the 400-meter dash and finished a very close second in the 800-meter dash. Killpack was only .2 of a second out of first with a time of 2:05.69 versus 2:05.47 for the winner. Justin Bernard finished fifth in the 800 to give Emery some points.

Zach Clement gave Emery points as he won the javelin and the discus and finished fourth in the shot put. Zach won the javelin by over two feet with a throw of 160’09.5″. Zach won the discus by more than five feet with a throw of 137’07.75″. In the shot put, he finished behind three Juan Diego throwers with a toss of 45’01.5″.
Emery did very well in the hurdles, as they stole the show in these two events. In the 110M hurdles, Levi Swasey took second and Kyle Holmes took third. In the 300M hurdles, McKay Allred finished first and Swasey finished third.
In the long jump, Kassidy Thompson finished third with a jump of 19’01”, Cole Bunderson finished fourth with a jump of 18’05” and JT Noyes finished fifth with a jump of 18’03”.
In the boy’s relay races, Emery took fourth in the 400-meter relay and second in both the 1600-meter relay and the medley relay.
Coach Gardner was asked about the possibilities of his athletes at state, “Tyler can score points in both the 400 and 800 if he runs his best races. Zach has a good shot at winning the discus and placing very high in the javelin. With McKay and Levi, we have a good shot of scoring points in the 300 hurdles. With our limited team, I believe that we can do alright.”
The state track meet will be held this Friday and Saturday at the BYU track facility. Events start each day at 7:30 a.m.
