The month of June will be busy at the John Wesley Powell River History Museum. They are holding their fourth Annual Canyon River Runners Art Show.
The Art Show is a good chance for us to see the talent and beauty that is all around us. The Show is open to all 8 years of age and older. There is a fee for entering and there are amateur and professional divisions. Each artist can bring two entries. All entries must be original and can be paintings, all media works, or sculptures having to do with river running. This could include landscapes, wildlife or outdoor activities related to the canyon areas – historical or present time. (No photographs).
You can bring the art to the Museum from May 25-28, but all artwork must be at the Museum by 7 p.m. on May 28.
For the rest of us who weren’t born with painting, drawing or sculpting talent there will be plenty to see as we appreciate the works of those with artistic flair.
On June 30, the Museum is hosting Shirley Venus Day. Shirley Venus was the wife of Joseph Venus who is the curator for the Art Gallery at the Museum. She passed away and the Museum lost a treasured friend.
From 8 a.m.-4 p.m. there will be a silent auction One of the items up for bid is a NBA basketball signed by Utah Jazz Head Coach Jerry Sloan and Assistant Head Coach Phil Jackson.
At noon the painting “Broken Oars” by Joseph Venus will be presented to the Museum in tribute to his wife Shirley. After the presentation, the Nine Mile Players will play until 2 p.m. in Shirley’s honor.
During the day, beside the Green River, some of Utah’s talented artists will be working. They will be there from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to paint, mingle and answer your questions.
At 4 p.m. the winners from the Shirley Venus Memorial Coloring Contest will be announced. This contest is open to all children between the ages of 5-12 and will have prizes for each age category.
