Danavin Reed tries to get an out at second. |
After decent weather for most of the spring, last week the unsettled rain and wind and cold nestled into the valley as the Emery Spartans opened region play by playing the Carbon Dinos. On Thursday, the Lady Spartans traveled to Price and lost 7-4 and on Friday, the Dinos traveled to Castle Dale and won the baseball game 10-3.
In the softball game, the Spartans started out strong as they scored two runs in the first inning. Chelsea Skinner became a runner as the Dino shortstop booted her hit. Skinner made it to third base on a double by Lacey Erickson. Brandee Wilson walked to load the bases. Skinner was picked off third base by the Dino catcher to eliminate one potential run. Erickson and Wilson both scored as Chantelle Benson got on base due to another Carbon error. With Adriane Weihing walking and Bailey Kay getting on due to another error, the Spartans were ready to break open the game with two out but Carbon got out of trouble at their pitcher struck out the next Emery batter. This inning was to be Emery’s best scoring opportunity.
Emery was held scoreless until the fourth inning when Danavin Reed singled, advanced to third on two passed balls and then scored on a Skinner sacrifice fly. Emery’s last score came in the seventh inning. Erickson walked and scored on a Weihing single. Emery’s only other base hit was by Wilson.
Carbon scored three in the first inning with three base hits, three in the second inning with three more base hits and one more time in the fourth inning.
In the baseball game on Friday, a slightly better day, Carbon was able to score two runs in each of the first, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings as they had Kyler Edgehouse’s number on this day. The Dinos had eight hits and Emery committed five errors to aid the Dinos.
Emery scored once in the third inning and twice in the fifth inning for their only runs of the day. In the third inning, Jordan Gee singled and Kade Jones tripled to score Gee with one out. Neither of the next two Emery batters was able to bring Jones home.
In the fifth inning, Steve Giles and Kesler Tanner each got on base due to a Carbon error. After a Jones walk, Justice got on due to another error and both Giles and Tanner scored. Emery did load the bases in the seventh inning before the last batter hit into a double play to end the threat and the ballgame.
Besides Kade and Gee, Ryne Jones and Ryan Draper each had a single in the game for Emery’s only hits.
The games this week find the softball team at North Sanpete for a double header Tuesday afternoon and the baseball team is at home Tuesday for a double header against those same Hawks.
