I am not sure that whupping is even a real word but it certainly does fit the Emery Spartan football team as they have now “whupped” three straight opponents by scoring more than 40 points and winning those three games by an average score of 44-13. Last week Emery went on the road and defeated American Leadership Academy in Spanish Fork by a score of 45-7. The week before, Emery hosted Ben Lomond of Ogden and won that game 45-12.
So the question is “just how good is this Emery team” and to be honest, I do not know for sure. I am impressed with their natural abilities, I like their work ethic and they seem to want to give it their all. But I am just a little prejudiced so I have to be careful in my assessment. Nevertheless, I think they can be pretty good if they continue doing what they have been doing.
In both games, Emery quickly got on the scoreboard. Against Ben Lomond, Emery scored a touchdown the first four times they had the ball. Against ALA, Emery scored three of the first four times they had the ball.
Besides the offense playing well, the Emery defense has also been stellar. Ben Lomond did not score until the fourth quarter when the game had long been decided. ALA’s offense never did score as the Eagles scored on a kick-off return. ALA had 12 yards of offense in the first half while Ben Lomond had 97 yards of first half offense.
In the Ben Lomond game, Ryne Jones scored the first touchdown on a 24-yard run. Dempsey Jeffs then hit Jordan Gee with a pass that went 36 yards for a touchdown. The last score of the first quarter was a 7-yard run by Chance Ariotti.
Emery scored three more times in the second quarter. Jeffs scored on a quarterback sneak from the 1-yard line, Cody Allen then returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown and finally Jeffs hit Gee with another pass and Gee scored from 26 yards out.

Emery only scored once in the second half as Emery and the clock was just a little merciful. Ryne Jones scored again, this time on a 57-yard run.
Against ALA, Jeffs to Gee continued to work as Gee scored on a play that went 51 yards. This was the second play of the game. Gee then scored on a 7-yard run as Emery led 13-0 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Emery scored twice more. Mike Jones scored from the fullback position on a 4-yard run and then Jeffs hit Ryne Jones with a pass that went 26 yards for a score.
Emery scored once in the third quarter on a 43-yard run by Ryne Jones. As the fourth quarter began, Ryne would score one more time, this time on a 12 yard run. To close out the scoring, Jeffs threw a pass to wide receiver Cody Allen and Cody scored on a play that went 52 yards.
Dempsey Jeffs completed three of five passes in the first game for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Jeffs completed 10 of 14 passes in the second game for 223 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground in the two games, Jordan Gee ran the ball for 173 yards and scored four times. Ryne Jones ran the ball for 212 yards and scored five times. Mike Jones ran the ball for 138 yards and a touchdown.
Emery had 358 yards of offense in the Ben Lomond game and a whopping 561 yards of offense in the ALA game.
The Emery JV team has won two of their three games while the Emery sophomores have won all three of their games as the Emery coaching staff works on building a successful program. The ‘black’ haired team and their black haired coaches are looking to continue their winning ways this week as they travel to Vernal to face the Uintah Utes on Friday night.
