Spartans destroy Grand in Moab 107-33
As a sports writer for the Emery Progress, it is always our goal to tell the truth but also to be nice in doing so. With that in mind, there is absolutely no other way to describe the Emery victory over Grand other than what the headline says. This victory, at 107-33, was the most lopsided win for the Spartans I remember for seasons and seasons. It seems the last game with a score like this was against Juab in 1990 or so.
Emery got off to a good start as they led after the first period 28-17. Now usually this quarter could be a highlight of most games but in this particular one, it was the low light. Emery won the next three periods by the amazing scores of 29-6, 30-8 and 20-2.
Twelve different Spartans scored in this game, as Coach Todd Jeffs had to deal more with substitutions than with strategy. Emery was led by their starting guard line in scoring in this game. Nevin Jensen led the team with 17 points followed by Dempsey Jeffs with 15 points and Jordan Gee with 12 points.
Also scoring in double figures for the game were Kyle Johansen with 12 points and Tanner Procarione with 10 points. Cameron Hansen, Tyler Killpack and Taylor Tanner each added 8 points in the game.
Gatlan Huntington scored 6 points, Brett Mecham scored 5 points, Karson Jensen scored 4 points and Vern Kofford scored 2 points to close out the Spartan scoring.
Emery made 41 field goals in the game versus 13 for the Devils. Emery made 18 of 29 free throws while Grand made 3 of 9.
Emery will travel back to southeast Utah Tuesday night to play San Juan before coming home this weekend to host the 10th Annual Coal Country Classic in the Spartan Center. Participating this season will be Emery, Carbon, Uintah, Morgan, Cedar, North Sanpete, Park City and Canyon View High Schools. Each team will play twice against an opponent that they usually would not face. The field includes almost half of all 3-A schools, so it is a good time to view other teams.
JV games begin Friday at 3:15 p.m. in the old gym and Saturday at 2 p.m. Varsity action begins Friday at 3:30 p.m. and Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Emery will play the 8 p.m. game each night. Carbon will play the 6:30 p.m. game each night. Emery will face Canyon View and Morgan.
