In a unanimous vote by the Huntington City Council, Hilary Gordon was chosen to serve as mayor of the city for the next five months. This vacancy was created when former Mayor Jackie Wilson resigned, Gordon will continue in the capacity of mayor until the election in November.
Mayor Wilson’s term would have expired in 2009, so an election will be held to determine who will serve the final two years of the term while Gordon, a Huntington city council person will hold the post until January 2008. As per the regulations, the position was advertised and three applications were received.
In the regular city council meeting, the council allowed each applicant to express views about the city. In this statement the applicant was also allowed to state what they would do for the city in the seat as mayor. With the exception of one, each candidate spoke while the remaining one was out of the room.
Following the statements, each council member expressed his or her views and voted on their choice for replacement mayor. Each of the sitting council persons voted for Gordon to make the vote unanimous. Gordon was immediately given the oath of office by Huntington City Clerk Jimie Dawn Jones. The city will now begin the process of advertising and filling the council vacancy left by Gordon.
Huntington resident Sharon Earl informed the council of a Price businessman who will come to Huntington with his compactor and compact junk vehicles.
He needs only a VIN inspection by the Sheriff’s Office to dispose of a car. Earl said that Duchesne has had old vehicle drives and removed many old cars from their town. The Huntington City Council was very interested in this idea.
In other business conducted by the Huntington City Council, Councilman Bob Mills brought a request to replace all the door locks on restrooms and the concession stand at the rodeo grounds. The request was approved to replace those locks with ADA approved fixtures.
Mills also announced the possibility of the elementary school having a parking lot for staff members by the beginning of school. Carol Pilling has agreed to lease a parcel of land near the school for the parking lot.
This should alleviate some of the overcrowding of 100 North in front of the school.
Councilperson Julie Jones announced work being done at the cemetery to reduce the brown spots in the lawn.
She stated the employee is working hard to get the brown spots out and Jones wants the residents of Huntington to know they are working on the problem.
The announcement was made concerning a Little Buckaroo Rodeo on Aug. 18. This rodeo will be held at the rodeo grounds in Huntington.
The next Huntington City Council meeting will be held Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m.
