After many years of little or no July 4 Celebration in Green River they celebrated July 4, in style. The activities started out with a bicycle parade there were 40 participants with four winners in each age group. The winners were: ages four and under- first, Angel Cordingly; second, Kaidence Meadows; third, Lilly Giles; and honorable mention, Marshall Snow.
Five and six year olds- first, Kollin Robertson; second, Katlynn Wetherington; third, Sam Corrigan/Zack Mecham; and honorable mention, Deserie Snow.
Seven-nine year olds- first, Tate Engleman; second, Madison Watterson; third, Cory Gordon; and honorable mention Seraj Rodman.
Ages 10 and up- first, Kira Engleman; second, Nick Cordingly; third, Richard Wilson; and honorable mention, Sydney Thayn.
During the bicycle parade, the judging for the pie baking contest was being judged. The winners were: first place Sharon Seely – cherry pie; second place Tammie Bentley – mixed berry pie; and third place Sharon Seely – peach pie.
Other outstanding pies were from Anastasia Siaperas who baked a tasty Shoo Fly pie and provided an excellent history information sheet with it and Jo Anne Chandler made her famous sweet potato pie.
The American Legion honored them with a flag ceremony and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Members participating were Tom Burr, Orson Anderson, Paul Price, Gary Riches, Justin Monroe and Christine Monroe who gave the commands. Every year the US Armed Forces give their all and sometimes even their lives to keep our freedom. Thank you each and every one of you for your service to this great country.
Sydney Thayn then sang the Star Spangled Banner leading into an excellent program put on by the Green River Community Center Summer Camp Kids.
The children told a little bit about what their summer camp was all about and then some history about the United States, followed by singing The Grand ‘Ole Flag and parading through the audience waving their American flags. What a great job they all did, thank you.
Hot dogs and hamburgers with all the trimmings, drinks, and dessert were provided by Green River City. The ladies of the churches made salads; it wouldn’t be a picnic without them. Luke Shorts donated all the buns. They visited, ate and drank (it was 106 degrees that day); the kids played games and ran races until dark. Then they moved over to the Shooting Sports Park for fireworks provided by Green River City manned by the Green River Fire Department. A good time was had by all. They appreciate all who made it so successful and fun.
