Ferron welcomes the Southeastern Utah Junior Livestock show

Competitors from around the state of Utah descended on Ferron bringing their steers, lambs, pigs, goats, and even their rabbits with them. The 69th annual Southeastern Utah Junior Livestock Show was held July 11-14.
Preparing an animal for the stockshow requires hours and hours of hard work and commitment from the exhibitors. The sponsors of the stockshow see more than kids and animals. They see the hard work, responsibility, goal setting and management skills learned by these young people.
The commitment on the part of the stockshow sponsors allows these young people to come back year after year. Many of the sponsors today were exhibitors themselves in their younger years. Since 1939, the stockshow has relied on the support of the generous sponsors. The exhibitors of yesteryear have become the parents, leaders and sponsors of the youth today.
To be an exhibitor in the stockshow you must be in the third grade and not less than 8 years of age as of January 1. Exhibitors can show through the same season as their high school graduation but not past their 19th birthday.
Exhibitors can list an affiliation with a group such as FFA or 4-H, but can only list one group. Exhibitors are required to own their animal and work with that animal for at least 100 days for market beef and 60 days for market swine and market lambs.
All of the animals are to be treated with dignity and respect in the stockshow. The animals aren’t to be treated with any harmful substances or their natural appearance and color are not to be altered in any way. Only animals in good health are encouraged to be part of the stockshow process.
One thing that adds to the atmosphere at the arena is the presentation by the exhibitors. They must be dressed appropriately with a white shirt and dark pants. Each of their shirts must have a collar and this adds to the professionalism of the event. Sloppy dress is not allowed among exhibitors.
Animals that are unmanageable are encouraged not to show at stockshows.
The market animals are suggested to show at certain weights. There are no maximum weight limits at the Southeastern Utah Junior Livestock Show. The beef can be in the weight range of 1,000 to 1,275 pounds. The sheep can be 90-130 pounds. The swine can be 240-290 pounds. The stockshow does have a minimum weight requirement which is: 1,000 for beef, 100 for sheep and 230 for swine.
The goal of the Southeastern Junior Livestock Show is to educate young people and improve the livestock in Utah.
When the animals arrive at the show they are weighed in and all exhibitors meet and receive instructions.
It takes a lot of volunteers to put together a stock show. Dennis Worwood is the local Utah State Extension director and his office is very involved in the stockshow process. On July 12 the exhibitors participated in hog showmanship for intermediate, beginner, junior and senior. A market beef fitting and showmanship followed the hogs. The market lamb also had a showmanship contest.
Other activities included the breeding sheep, goat and beef show. The rabbit show was also held on Thursday.
On Friday the judging of market hogs took place. There was also a weigh in for wether goats. The day included judging of market lambs, steers and the goats. The exhibitors gathered on Friday for an ice cream social and an awards program followed by a dance at the multipurpose building.
The buyers brunch took place Saturday morning followed by the auction of the market animals starting with hogs, lambs and steers.
