Children at the Green River Community Center/Boys and Girls Club with the donated soccer balls.

Chip’s Grand Tire of Moab donated 18 much needed soccer balls to the Community Center/Boys and Girls Club of Green River. The balls will be used by the School of Rock Summer Camp a program offered at the Community Center/Boys and Girls Club where every Monday is Sports Day. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the kids read, participate in arts, dance, singing and (study rocks of course). Fridays they perform a service project and then enjoy water games, where Fire Chief Howard Burnett provides the water and cool ice cream treats.
The soccer balls will be given to the Center’s AYSO Soccer Teams at the end of summer camp in July. The Community Center/Boys and Girls Club really appreciate Chip’s Grand Tire in Moab, and Fire Chief Burnett.
On June 22 a dangerous fire was burning in Moab threatening property and homes. While firefighters were working diligently to contain the blaze, volunteers were working hard to prepare shelter (if needed), drinking water, and supplies. Katrina of the American Red Cross contacted AmeriCorps* VISTA Zina Willard currently serving at the Community Center/Boys and Girls Club in Green River and requested help.
Katrina asked Zina to locate water for the firefighters. Zina called Mike Ruggeri the Supervisor at Culligan Drinking Water Products in Moab who was in his family’s back yard helping wet down weeds and property to try and protect it from the fire that was burning dangerously close. When Zina requested help with drinking water for the firefighters, Mike responded with, “tell me how much you need and where you want it and I’ll deliver it.”
Zina then connected Katrina with Mike and offered further assistance to Katrina and the Red Cross such as food, shelter additional volunteers.
