On July 11, the Emery Town Council met at the ball field to discuss the lighting project at the park. The Emery Youth City Council, under the leadership of Mistie Christiansen, set out to do fund raisers to put lights at the ball field. At this meeting the youth council informed the city council of having the needed funds to complete the project.
Christiansen worked with many local people and was able to secure the four posts and their installation at no cost. The final portion of the project is to determine the placement of any extra lighting in the park other than the lights to be placed on the poles to light the ball field.
One successful project the youth council hosted was an auction of donated goods and services. For this project alone, the group raised $1,808. Many residents donated items such as carved elk antlers, crocheted items, and baked goods. The youth council auctioned their services for yard work, window washing, or other labor projects.
Mayor Gary Petty asked the residents of Emery who were present where in the park they would like to see lights other than on the four posts already in place to put the lights for the ball field. One resident suggested a light to shine on the monument near the grandstand. Another suggested lighting the horseshoe pits and the grandstands.
Councilman Pat Sundstrom suggested doing the outfield lights then consider what else needs to be lit at that time. Christiansen stated that if the city council will approve the project, it can be completed in about a week. When the council reconvened at City Hall, they approved the project. Emery Telcom will be doing the boring work and installing the conduit for the electric lines. Lofthouse Electric was awarded the bid to complete the electrical work.
In other business conducted by Emery Town, approval was given to a request by Morris Sorensen for help from the town to go after funding to do a project with the water system. A new diversion is needed for the culinary water system, and along with that, a new desilting structure is needed. Sorensen expects the project to cost $1.7 million and the canal company cannot go after funding.
Sorensen stated Johansen and Tuttle have engineered the desilting structure and all that is needed now is the funding to complete the project. “This city will soon find itself in an emergency situation if these items are not taken care of very soon,” said Sorensen. “The city may be in danger of losing their culinary water.” The council approved the motion to help with the situation.
The council approved a business license for Doug Taylor contingent on his bringing in a plat map for approval. On this plat map, the structure he intends to build for his business will be required to be shown on the map.
Nash Roberts was given approval to use fire department funds to purchase a laptop for the fire department. This computer is needed to track fire fighters hours and training, and also converse with the state fire marshal.
Approval was given to Councilman Eric Anderson to form a committee to investigate annexing all property which is noted in the town’s 20 year annexation plan. Anderson feels this annexation is needed to solve several problems some of the residents are having with the town borders. Approval was also given to Christiansen to order the stage for the new community center.
The next Emery Town Council meeting will be Aug. 14 at 6 p.m.
