Boy Scouts are usually the ones rendering aid and service in local communities, but now the Emery County boy scouts are in need of some help so they can participate in the national service project that is coming to Emery County in June.
Local Buckhorn District Scout leader, Eldon Holmes explained what is going on, “The Boy Scouts of America, have a division of scouting that is called Order of the Arrow. This group of boys and adults are compared to the Honor Society of Scouting or the Marines as the few and the best. The motto of the OA is cheerful service.
“In the spirit of cheerful service, the national level of OA has created the ArrowCorp 5. This is five different service projects throughout the nation. One of these national projects will take place right here in Emery County in June. The project is to cut back on the tamarisk plants in the Buckhorn area. It is a real problem as tamarisk is taking over land and consuming precious water. This project will not eliminate the problem, but will knock it back seriously.
“The National Order of the Arrow has created this ArrowCorp5 program to entice the scouts to travel across the nation to see our great country and perform a substantial service project. The problem is the cost. It will cost $300 per scout to be involved with this whole package. Because of the planning for the whole nation the package cannot be altered for local individuals. We would love to have these boys be involved with this exciting program.

“Our OA travels around the county performing eagle feather ceremonies for our eagle scouts. They perform Arrow of Light ceremonies for our cub scouts. They also are the working staff for our spring and fall camporees and the Klondike Derby.
“We would like to plead with the county citizens, governments and business to sponsor our boys to help the nation to help our area. The ArrowCorp 5 program will get national media attention. We will have shirts printed that have sponsors names printed on them for the boys to wear during the project. Please help us to get behind our youth that work so hard so early in life. Please donate. Any amount will make a difference. A $300 sponsorship will make a huge difference,” said Holmes.
