Spencer Fehlberg delivers his honor address. |
Canyon View Junior High presented their closing program on May 16. School principal Larry Davis along with band teacher Reed Fehlberg presented certificates of completion to the ninth grade class of 2008.
Davis complimented the staff at the junior high. He said they work hard to prepare the students during their junior high years.
Jackie Weihing and the yearbook class prepared the slide show for the program.
“This class has received many honors, awards and championships. It has been a privilege to watch you grow and mature,” said Davis. He expressed appreciation to the parents and community for their support of the students at Canyon View. He appreciates the families who do whatever it takes to get their children educated.
Davis presented the departmental awards along with the athletic and academic awards. He said the student athletes have to reach greater heights and stay off probation and maintain good grades in order to participate. They represent the school wherever they go. This year the athletic teams won championships in track, football, basketball, wrestling and quiz bowl.

Two honor students, Nathan Mecham and Spencer Fehlberg gave honor addresses. To be an honor student at Canyon View, the student must have a 4.0 grade point average all through their junior high years. The honor students received a trophy and a cash award from an anonymous donor.
Fehlberg said he was happy to be part of their awesome class. He decided he wanted to get straight As and one time in math he had an A- so he went to Mr. Luce to see what he could do to get that grade up. He was able to do that and maintain his straight A average.
Fehlberg said he had a goal of getting the academic award. He said others might have different goals, but that’s OK as long as they have goals and strive to achieve them.
He said they are moving on to high school and things won’t get any easier. The challenges of high school can be overcome if the students don’t allow obstacles to stop them; but rather let the obstacles make the students stronger. “The goals we set will determine the success we have,” said Fehlberg.
Mecham encouraged students to be the best they can be and to set and accomplish goals. One goal of his was to get straight As. Mecham said he loves sports and sports help build determination. He said his football team was determined to beat Mont Harmon and they went on to reach that goal even though they were the underdogs.
The basketball team went on to beat Mont Harmon in the tournament even though they had lost twice to them in the regular season.
Mecham said a goal he had was to get his name on the wrestling wall of champions. To do this you have to win your weight division in the junior high tournament or place in the top six in the state junior high wrestling championships. In his three years wrestling he placed third and second twice, but didn’t win the weight division. This past January he was able to go to the state junior high tournament and place sixth there.
Mecham said determination is something we all need to have and we need to stay focused. He thanked the teachers at Canyon View for their wonderful examples. He thanked grandparents, and thanked his mom who tries to attend all his activities, but was unable to come to graduation due to just having a new baby. He thanked his dad who is his coach, counselor, teacher and who has always been there for him.
After the program, visitors gathered in the commons area for refreshments. The junior high students participated in a dance after the program.
