With a win over Navajo Mountain last week giving Green River a tie for the region girls basketball title and then a coin flip giving Green River the number one region seed, the Lady Pirates are ready for the state action to begin this week at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield. Game time will be 4 p.m. Wednesday against the winner of Monday’s play-in game between Valley and Christian Heritage.
Navajo Mountain never showed up to play in this final region contest and suffered a most lopsided defeat. Green River led 18-0 after the first period and 35-3 at the half. The beating continued in the second half as Green River added 16 points in the third quarter and 24 points in the final quarter. Navajo Mountain could only add 4 points in the third and 5 points in the fourth and lost the game 75-12.
Brandi Webster finished the season as the number two scorer in 1-A basketball with an average of 20.26 points per game. Brandi scored 25 points in the Navajo Mountain game.
Seven other Pirates scored in this game. Bailie Packer and Crosby Hatt each scored 10 points. Jill Vetere scored 7 points. Leah Swalberg, Cady Mecham and Tracy Engelman each scored 6 points. Sarah Swalberg finished with 2 points in the game.
After starting the season with five losses in the first seven games, Green River finished the season by winning 10 of 12. Their season record is 12-7. They finished region with a 7-1 record.
The early favorite for the 1-A title is Rich with a record of 18-1. Intermountain Christian has a record of 18-2, Bryce Valley us 16-4, Piute is 17-4 and Panguitch is 14-7 to round out the other early favorites.
