Green River Senior Center: Green River declares senior citizen day as new center opens

Commissioner Gary Kofford welcomed everyone out to the new building dedication. He said it was a prime location right across from the school and the seniors can watch the children at play as they have their lunches and activities.
James Dresslar was the architect for the project. Henderson Construction built the building. Kofford expressed appreciation for the architect and the builder along with the Municipal Building Authority committee comprised of the commissioners along with Randy Jensen and Sharon Jensen.
Kofford called upon Pastor Kirk Dunham to give the dedicatory prayer for the new center. Dunham said gray hair is a crown of splendor and wisdom. He said his grandpa came across Colorado in a covered wagon and when he died all of his history went with him. His family should have asked him more questions. “At our older stage in life we must pass on what we know to the next generation,” said Dunham. This new center should be a place of learning and a place to share,” said Dunham.
Sharon Nelson sang a song on the program. The cameo club for the Ms. Senior Utah Pageant was on hand at the Green River Center to share song and dance. They also presented Char Uptain with a $2,000 check for the Boys and Girls Club of Green River. Char won this special service award when she was a contestant in the Ms. Senior Utah Pageant last season. Barbara Newman the current Ms. Senior Utah sang a number. Jean Jones, a former Ms. Senior Utah presented a poem which highlighted her accomplishments. She designs dresses and jewelry as well as interior and home design.
Charlene Whitehead with the High Steppers performed a tap routine. Mimi Murdoch the queen from 2007 performed a mamba dance.
Judy Ann Scott had some presentations to make and gave out appreciation plaques. One to Joyce Powell senior director and one to each commissioner; Gary Kofford, Jeff Horrocks and Drew Sitterud. Commissioner Horrocks encouraged the seniors of Green River to meet often and to enjoy their new building.
Green River Mayor Patrick Brady proclaimed Aug. 19 as Senior Citizens day in Green River. He presented a plaque to the new center with the following letter: “The city of Green River would like to recognize this beautiful and spacious and newly built senior citizens center. Opportunities for growth abound through a wide variety of recreational, nutritional, educational, wellness, travel and social service programs in an ambience that is both elegant and warm.
“This facility is geared specifically for the enjoyment and leisure of the mature adult population and with the generous service of volunteers and dedicated staff a wide range of services and programs to seniors are offered to help ensure that they can live safely and independently.
“The goal of the senior center is to empower the senior citizens of Green River and to remain part of a thriving community environment for as long as they are willing and able. The senior citizens of Green River have always suggested a rare sense of community and are a group of people that look out for one another in their time of need and are the heart of what we are. This day is to be set aside as a reminder of the wonderful seniors that reside in our community.”
