After losing two at Juan Diego the previous week, the Emery High baseball team came back strong last week and defeated two opponents by 10 runs each. On Friday, Emery defeated region opponent North Sanpete 12-2 and then on Saturday, in a make-up game due to earlier weather conditions, Emery defeated Uintah 13-3.
Talking with Coach Jimmy Jones, “We are finally fielding the ball better. We are not just out kickin it around. Our record is 5-7 but it could easily be 8-5 or 9-4. We are hitting the ball well and our pitching is getting better.”
Against North Sanpete, Gatlan Huntington opened on the mound and pitched the first four innings. Skyler Jensen pitched the final inning in relief. In those four innings, Huntington kept the Hawks at bay until the fourth inning. In that inning, five batters got aboard but only two were able to score.
In the final inning, North Sanpete got a single but the other three batters gounded out or flew out.
Emery scored two runs in the first inning, one more in the second inning, four more in the third inning and five more in the fourth inning. In the first inning, Ryne Jones tripled and Blake Mortensen singled to score Jones. Jordan Gee singled Mortensen to second and Mortensen scored on a double by Derrick Allred.
In the second inning, Brett Mecham led off the inning with a double, stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Colby Snow to left field.
In the third ining, Mortensen singled again followed by singles by Gee and Allred. After a sacrifice bunt by Huntington, Mecham and Tayler Tanner walked and Colby Snow singled to score the final of the four runs in that inning.

In the final inning, Mortensen singled again to open the inning followed by a walk to Gee. Allred singled and then Jensen doubled followed by a Mecham single. All would eventually score as Snow closed out the inning with a double and got stranded on base.
In the Uintah game, Brett Mecham opened on the mound and pitched three innings giving up one run and two hits. Blake Mortensen pitched the final two innings giving up two runs.
Emery went down in order in the first inning but scored six runs in the second inning to take a big lead. Emery would score two more runs in the third inning, four more in the fourth inning and then the final run in the fifth inning to get to the 10-run rule.
Mortensen singled again to start off the second inning. Mecham singled followed by Huntington walking and Jensen walking, Snow also walked and Jason Giles followed with a double. Jones followed with a double to empty the bases except for himself.
In the third inning, Gee got on by error, Huntington walked, Jensen walked and Gee and Huntington scored on passed balls. In the fourth inning, Giles got on base, Jones got on via an error, Gee singled, Mecham doubled and then North Sanpete walked Huntington, Skyler Jorgensen and Jensen to load the bases before the next two batters would strike out off a new pitcher and end the Emery threat and the inning.
Mortensen scored Emery’s last run. He singled, got to second on a single by Gee and scored on a single by Mecham.
Emery plays Delta at home this Tuesday in a double header starting at 2:30 p.m.
