Nielson Construction was recently awarded the Utah Department of Transportation’s and the Association of General Contractors, 2007 Contractor of the Year Award based on their performance on the State Route 10 – Muddy Creek to Ferron project.
Lyndon Friant, UDOT Region Four resident engineer said, “The project scope included slope flattening and the overlay of an existing pavement section on State Route 10 – a simple project by UDOT standards, but completed on a section of roadway where one coal-haul truck per minute frequented the project. From day one, Nielson’s came well prepared and ready to work.
“They were able to submit a great baseline schedule and, more importantly, use that schedule to their benefit. This meant completing individual tasks ahead of projected schedules, and constantly monitoring progress. Nielson’s has great office staff that understands what is required by way of the submittals and other requirements such as EEO and certifications.
“Nielson Construction is very ‘partnering oriented,’ and looks at each issue independent of others and works to resolve issues quickly and efficiently. One example of their positive partnering attitude occurred when their HMA (hot mix asphalt) production was shutdown mid-stream in the project. Reasoning for the shutdown was discussed and a congenial resolution reached quickly.
“Even though the contractor lost an estimated $20,000 on the action, they were grateful to be able to resolve the issues at hand and proceed through the project. By acknowledging that they had some risk that they needed to accept, the situation was resolved quickly and effectively with little repercussions on their relationship with UDOT through project completion.
“Nielson Construction also helped initiate a weekly partnering and coordination meeting to help all parties involved stay in tune and up to date on changes and improvements to the projects.
“Nielson Construction also garnered safety scores in the high 90’s on monthly inspections and addressed all safety items in a timely and congenial manner. Nielson Construction has a keen understanding of the road construction business and seldom ever needs specialized instruction on issues of compliance. As evidence of their commitment to quality, they tend to self-correct on items of project quality. One example of this trait on the Muddy Creek to Ferron project was their commitment to construct surface ditches at the top of each cut – at the company’s own expense.
“Based on these merits, Nielson Construction is highly deserving of UDOT’s Contractor of the Year, 2007 award,” said Friant.
Wayne and John Nielson accepted the 2007 Contractor of the Year award for Nielson Construction. The award was presented at the Association of General Contractors annual convention held in Salt Lake. Guy Fugal, AGC president made the presentation. “We congratulate Nielson Construction on a job well done,” said Fugal.
Nielson Construction has had a busy winter continuing to work on projects such as the Moore Road. The South Moore project will be complete with paving by fall of this year. They have developed the gas sites for several gas wells in the area working for XTO, Bill Barrett Corporation, Conoco/Phillips, Delta Petroleum and Anadarko.
Nielson Construction is working on constructing the cells for storage of the Moab uranium tailings at Crescent Junction. They are working on the second phase of the Huntington/Cleveland Irrigation company salinity reduction irrigation project. Nielson Construction has installed all of the pipeline beginning at Huntington North Reservoir. Another big project Nielson’s will be involved with is the constructing of the four lanes from Wellington to the East Carbon junction. Nielson’s will also be working on Cedar Hills drive in Price.
Nielson Construction is a major locally owned employer in the Carbon and Emery areas. They are concerned and interested in the economic development of the region and the welfare of their employees.
Another project for the company is the construction of a second asphalt facility at Ridge Road in Carbon County.
