Just as they went to the Christmas break and just as they came back from it, the Green River Lady Pirates won ball games to take their season record to 5-5 after starting the season 2-5. The boy’s basketball team continues to struggle as they lost 2 games over the break and then came back to school and started off the new year with another loss.
The Lady Pirates defeated Whitehorse in region play by a score of 59-20 and then started the new year right with a 50-44 win over Tabiona. The Pirates went to Wayne to play in their annual holiday tournament and lost both games. They lost to the host team 65-42 on the 28th of December and then lost the next night to Intermountain Christian 61-50. On January 5th, Green River lost to Altamont 58-43.
Brandi Webster played well in both games and was the leading scorer for Green River each night with 24 points. Against Whitehorse, Leah Swalberg also played well and scored 13 points with Crosby Hatt scoring 11 points. Sarah Swalberg put in 7 points with Tracy Engelman and Bailie Packer each scoring 2 points.
Against Tabiona, Jill Vetere scored 11 points with Crosby Hatt scoring 8 points, Tracy Engelman scoring 5 points and Leah Swalberg scoring 2 points.
Against Whitehorse, Green River took an 18-8 first quarter lead and then never let that dwindle. They outscored Whitehorse in each of the periods in getting the win. They won the second period 16-7, the third period 14-6 and the final period 11-5 in getting the win.
Against Tabiona, Green River squeaked by each quarter with the lead as it grew slowly throughout the game. They led 11-10 after one period, 27-24 at the half, 40-34 after three and each team scored 10 points in the final period.
In the Wayne loss, Green River was outscored each of the first three periods as the Wayne lead grew. Brennan Bigelow scored 12 points to lead the team. Tyson Johnson scored 9 points, Kayden Mecham scored 6 points and Jason Johnson scored 6 points. Also scoring with 2 points were Holden Marshall, Luis Mendoza, Earl Nelson and Keith Clark.
Against Intermountain, Green River trailed after the first quarter 13-12 before leading at the half 27-25. The third quarter belonged to Intermountain Christian as they put the game away.
Bigelow again was the leading scorer, this time with 17 points. Mendoza and Mecham each scored 9 points while Jason scored 8 points and Tyson scored 7 points.
Against Altamont, Green River lost every period as Altamont cruised to the victory. Mecham led the way with 14 points while Mendoza scored 10 points and Jason scored 9 points. Tyson scored 6 points and Bigelow scored 2 points.
The girls take a 3-game road trip this week to Monticello on Thursday night, Navajo Mountain on Friday night and Monument Valley on Saturday night. The boy’s team will play Grand Tuesday and then travel to Monument Valley on Saturday night.
