Letter to the Editor: Response to Pelteson letter

By BLISS W. TEW Orem

Editor,
Frank Pelteson’s Aug. 26 letter brought out important truths surrounding the Beijing Olympics. The recent book by Jung Chang, MAO: the Unknown Story, begins with the opening statement “Mao Tse-tung, who for decades held absolute power over the lives of one-quarter of the world’s population, was responsible for over 70-million deaths in peacetime, more than any other twentieth-century leader.” Should the enormous crimes of the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) be ignored for some games?
When a few in Utah were awarded the Winter Olympics, I visited our State Capital Building. I found a shadow box display where pamphlets from the 1933 Olympic games held in National Socialist (NAZI) Germany and Utah’s Winter Olympics pamphlets were arranged together. Too few understand that such Public Private Partnerships are modern fascism.
During Utah’s 2002 Winter Olympics, I visited the Provo City Mayor’s office and demanded that they take down the red flags of Communist China then displayed around Provo by Provo’s city government. I pointed out that China’s red flag represented a more murderous dictatorship than the red Nazi flag with its black Swastika had represented. The next day, Provo City took down China’s red flags.
It’s outrageous to me when America’s top leaders legitimize horrors like the People’s Republic of China and its ruling Chinese Communist Party by attending the Beijing Olympic Games.
