Holly Damron, the reigning Miss Emery, and her first attendant Allie Stokes spent some time before Christmas delivering lap robes to all the veterans and their spouses in the two care center facilities in Emery County.
Their first stop was Emery County Care and Rehab in Ferron where they distributed 25 hand crocheted lap robes. At their second stop at Turnquist Retreat and Cottages, the two delivered 17 lap robes to residents.
Damron, whose platform concerns support for the military and their families, has participated in two activities during this holiday season. She recently helped gather items to be shipped to the military people serving overseas for Christmas, and this lap robes project.
Damron’s great aunt, Darlene Thorne, 78, of Bountiful, crocheted all the lap robes.
Recently, Thorne was diagnosed with a brain tumor which, on removal, left her partially paralyzed on the left side and blind in her left eye. Crocheting is her therapy. She has refused to give in to her health problems.
Thorne is the manager of the apartment where she lives, she is an avid Jazz fan, and a constant crocheter. Besides crocheting the lap robes for Damron, Thorne crochets afghans for babies at Primary Childrens Hospital.
She donates the afghans so each baby will have something to go home with. She has donated more than 170 afghans in the last seven years.
Damron and Stokes were both home in Emery County on break from college just before Christmas and delivered the lap robes to the care centers.
