Green River High boys basketball begins season

After opening the season before Thanksgiving with a 67-48 loss against Wayne High School, Green River boys basketball played two games last week and split the pair. On Wednesday night, Green River edged out Grand 48-47 and then on Friday night, the Pirates went down to defeat against Tabiona 57-45.
Against Grand, Tyson Johnson led the team with 17 points and scored his last two in the last seconds of the game to help his team win. Kayden Mecham added 16 points in the win as he hit three 3-pointers.
After leading the entire game, the Pirates had to fight off Grand in the final period to claim the win. Green River led 13-11 after one period, 28-23 at the half and 39-33 at the end of the third period.
Also scoring in the game were Jason Johnson with 6 points, Brennan Bigelow with 4 points, Holden Marshall with 3 points and Josh Smarts with 2 points.
On Friday night, Tabiona used a huge third quarter to break open a close game and claim the win. The Pirates led 13-11 after one period and the two teams were tied at the half 25-25. Tabiona outscored Green River 19-5 in the third quarter before Green River won the final period 15-13.
Bigelow led the team with 13 points and Mecham added 10 points. Jason and Tyson each had 6 points and Justin Johnson and Marshall each scored 4 points.
In the Wayne game, Green River was outscored in every period but the final one. Tyson Johnson led the team with 16 points and Jason Johnson scored 13 points. Mecham had 12 points. Bigelow added 5 points and Smarts added 2 points.
