Last week should have seen the Emery High Lady Spartans add two wins to their season record but instead they split for the week, as they were unable to get it done in Grantsville. After a relatively easy game on Tuesday in Vernal where they defeated Uintah 64-37, the Lady Spartans traveled to Grantsville on Thursday night and handed the Cowboys a win 55-48.
With Lacey Montgomery still injured and not playing and Shianne Allred home ill, the undermanned Spartans could not overcome Abbie Kay and Tiffany Tuttle fouling out early in the fourth quarter as Grantsville came from seven points down to win. Grantsville outscored Emery 20-6 in that final period to secure the win.
After trailing 16-12 after the first quarter, Emery outscored Grantsville 21-12 in the second quarter to grab the halftime lead at 33-28. Abbie Kay led Emery in the first period with seven points while Tiffany led the second period with 7 points. Emery won the third period 9-7.
Kay led the team in scoring with 15 points in three quarters of play. Frankie Komar scored 14 points with Jodi Robertson scoring 10 points. Tuttle scored nine points with no other Spartan scoring in the game.
Emery was six for nine at the free throw line for 67 percent. From the field they were a cold 15 for 39 for 38 percent and an even colder 27 percent from behind the 3-point line where they were four for 15. Nine of the missed shots were in the paint with several being lay-up type shots. Four of the missed shots were from the free throw line area.
Abbie pulled down 10 rebounds in her playing time with three of those coming on the offensive end of the floor. Abbie also had three blocks in the game.
At Uintah, Emery got out to a big lead and never let it go. Abbie and Tiffany each scored eight points in a 22-12 first quarter. Jodi Robertson scored eight points in the second quarter as the Spartans extended their lead to 39-21. With Frankie Komar scoring five points in the third quarter to pace the offensive effort, Emery won the period 16-5 to now lead by 29 points.
Tuttle led the team in scoring with 14 points while Abbie was right behind with 12 points. Taylor Mann, a sophomore post player at 6’1″, and Frankie each scored 11 points in the game. Jodi added 10 points as five Spartans finished the game in double figures.
Brooke Jensen scored four points and Makia Sherman scored two points for the only other two Spartans to score.
Coach Gordon did not like giving a game away even if it was on the road. He hopes his team will learn from the game at Grantsville and be determined not to let it happen again. “We need our starters on the floor not the bench when the game is on the line,” Gordon stated.
Emery will travel to South Sevier to play the Rams during the holidays on Dec. 30 and then will host Dixie on Jan. 2 in the Spartan Center. South Sevier is currently ranked number 1 in 2-A basketball and are the defending state champs with most of the team back.
