Emery traveled to Canyon View and Richfield High Schools last week and split the games but the story is the thin Emery Spartans may have lost Lacey Montgomery for some time due to a knee injury.
Emery defeated Canyon View 51-34 before losing to Richfield 58-50.
Montgomery, who starts at a wing position for the Lady Spartans, was injured in the Canyon View game. Lacey tried to play Friday night against the Wildcats but the first time she tried cutting down she went. Lacey brings athleticism and speed to the team and is a decent shooter.
In Cedar City, Emery had a great first quarter as they shut down the Falcons offensively with good pressure defense. Emery led after the first period 12-3. Canyon view never really got any closer the rest of the night.
Head Coach Steven Gordon on the Canyon View game, “We played pretty good against the Falcons. We shot the ball decently and played great defense. We played well.”
Emery then led 23-16 at the half and 38-22 after the third quarter. Leading the way for the lady Spartans was Jodi Robertson with 19 points. ShiAnne Allred scored 11 points followed by Abbie Kay with 6 points. Taylor Mann and Frankie Komar each scored 5 points with Montgomery scoring 3 points before leaving the game and Jessica Murray scored 2 points.
Coach Gordon on the Wildcat game, “Richfield is a good team. Richfield might be favored to win it all because they are huge. They start a 6’4″ girl and a 6’1″ player. It seems as if their guards are 5’10”. We could not make a shot in Richfield. We were 3 for 11 from behind the 3-point line and missed almost half our free throws. We also had 19 turnovers. Our girls were tired. It’s early in the season and we don’t have the legs to play two straight games. We had good shots but they were just short.” Dead legs explain short shots and turnovers.
Emery trailed 15-14 after the first quarter and 29-22 at the half. Richfield got up by 12 in the third quarter as Emery had trouble defending sophomore Brooke Bliss. Bliss finished the game with 24 points.
Kay and Komar were the leading scorers with 15 points each and Robertson added 12 points to also finish in double figures. Allred and Mann finished the night with 4 points each.
Emery has Cedar City at home Tuesday night and then plays ALA in Castle Dale Thursday night.
