Huntington Mayor Hilary Gordon approached the Emery County Commission regarding the installation of a new RV dump in Huntington. The original plan was to place it at the rodeo grounds, but further research revealed that spot was not a good choice because there have been problems in the past with the sewer system at the rodeo grounds. The county owns a piece of property across from the ball complex which Huntington City wants to use for this RV dump. Mayor Gordon said the amount budgeted by the Community Impact Board and the bid for the project differed so that adjustment will need to be made. She said BKs is the only RV dump in Huntington and many times the trailers are lined up to dump there. The new facility will accommodate two trailers at a time.
Darrel Leamaster with the Castle Valley Special Service District felt the land owned by the county would be a good choice. Commissioner Drew Sitterud asked County Attorney David Blackwell about the county policy concerning donating land. Attorney Blackwell said if the land donation is for a public purpose then it is legal. Commissioner Sitterud said they don’t want to start a precedence by donating land. Commissioner Jeff Horrocks said each situation is different and should be dealt with on a case by case basis. The land in Huntington is not prime real estate. Commissioner Gary Kofford said he talked to the county assessor and she said the parcel in question is valued at $300.
Commissioner Kofford said Huntington should think about having a dumpster at the RV dump because people like to dump their trash the same time they dump their sewer. Mayor Gordon said Huntington is considering having a roll-off dumpster at the rodeo grounds year round for dumping. Commissioner Sitterud said it wouldn’t be a good idea to have a large dumpster right across from the ball field in case the wind blows trash over onto the fields.
Commissioner Kofford said the RV dump would be a benefit for all county residents not just those coming down Huntington Canyon. The commissioners voted to approve the donation of the land for the new RV dump in Huntington. Mayor Gordon said Huntington City is also in negotiations with the cattlemen’s association for land by the junior high which they will trade for city land. If this deal works out then Huntington City would be able to expand the site for the RV dump site. Right now it will just encompass a small area and Commissioner Sitterud was concerned that larger trailers will use the ball complex parking lot to turn into the RV dump which won’t be good for the complex parking lot as it isn’t thick asphalt.
Commissioner Kofford said with the proper signage, trailers might be able to use the loop road to enter the RV dump. A title search and survey need to be completed on the land and Huntington City will be responsible for any associated costs. Work on the RV dump will begin as soon as these steps are taken care of.
