Utah House of Representatives District 70: Rep. Kay McIff

It is my great privilege to serve the citizens of Emery, Sanpete and Sevier in the Utah Legislature. I bring a somewhat unique perspective to that body, having served extensively in all three branches of government. I promise continued vigilance and energy in your behalf, and make this brief report on areas of emphasis during my first term in office. I conclude with a personal note and information about my background.
Education: Stood firm in defense of public schools; worked to increase teacher salaries and expand higher education opportunities at SNOW and CEU; sponsored measure to provide minimum capital funding for less affluent and small rural districts.
Land and water: Joined in effort to maintain access to public lands, restore fire damaged areas, eradicate cheat grass and protect water rights against hoarding, speculation and the insatiable appetite of down-stream states.
Local government: Supported allowing municipalities to bank water reasonably necessary for future growth; helped secure fair share and release of mineral lease revenue for impacted counties.
Mining: Served on the Mine Safety Commission and helped steer a conservative course designed to enhance the safety of miners without creating burdensome regulations or additional red tape.
Fiscal responsibility: Supported spending and saving decisions that have resulted in Utah being recognized as the best managed state in the nation.
A personal note: The last few years have seen great advances in our state. Though the present is challenging, I remain optimistic about the future. Our strength remains rooted in the goodness and industry of our people. It is a valued privilege to represent you in the Utah Legislature. I strive to be worthy of your continued trust.
Background: Before being elected to the Utah House, Representative McIff served as a District Court Judge, County Attorney, Chair of a University Board of Trustee and as a member of the Board of Regents governing higher education in Utah. A native of Sanpete County, he now lives in Richfield, with his wife Renee, an educator by profession. The couple has five children and nine grandchildren.
