We are all grateful that we live in this valley. I decided 12 years ago that one way I could give back to the community was to serve on the School Board. I had children in school then. Now I have grandchildren in our schools. Over these years, we have worked hard, through both good and bad economic times, to keep our class size low, to pay our teachers and other district employees fairly, to help our students continue to excel, and to manage our aging buildings and other assets. Our students do well in college and on competency exams. They received $615,000 in scholarships last year alone. They received 1,226 college credits last year, saving parents $250,000 plus room, board and transportation costs.
We face challenges in the future. Enrollment has declined 35 percent since 1989, state funding (WPU) has not kept pace with our needs. Fuel costs for buses, cost of heating and cooling our aging buildings, and health insurance costs are soaring. We have an effective and professional staff and faculty who have been equal to every challenge that has come our way. It has been an honor being part of the team.
