The Emery High girl’s tennis team traveled to St. George last week and returned as the third place finisher behind Desert Hills and Juan Diego. The team played in one of the two dual regional championship tournaments being played in the state. The meet featured regions 8 and 9 while the other meet featured regions 10 and 11.
Before the team traveled to St. George, they hosted Juan Diego in the final region match of the season. Only Emery’s second doubles team grabbed a win. Courtney Sitterud and Kaitlin Potter finished the regular season undefeated with the win.
It was not easy for the Spartan pair. They won the first game 6-4 and they were down in the second game 0-4 before they rallied and won the game 6-4. Courtney and Kaitlin then finished in second place in the meet down south. They defeated Hurricane 6-1, 6-1 in the first round followed by a win over Salem Hills 6-4, 6-1. They then lost for the first time this season, 6-2, 6-0 to Desert Hills.
Adri Weihing and Melanie Frisbee finished third in region 8 and finished third in the meet to exceed their expectations for the season. They defeated Carbon 6-0, 6-0 then Hurricane 6-2, 6-1 before losing to Juan Diego 6-3, 7-6. Emery then defeated Canyon View 6-4, 6-2 to grab the third place seed.
Whitney Saupan finished sixth in the tournament and also qualified for the state meet. Katie Turner and Stevie Feuers played but did not qualify.
Last season’s Pine View coach coaches Desert Hills, a new St. George school. Pine View won the 4-A state title last season. He brought his champion girls with him plus got a state champion out of Dixie and another out of Snow Canyon as they appear to be the team to beat for the state championship. Desert Hills won all championships except first singles, which Juan Diego won.
The girls now travel to BYU for the state meet this Friday and Saturday. Good luck.
