FERRON – Phyllis Austin, age 84, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away Aug. 23, 2009, after a long and fulfilling life.
She was born May 21, 1925, to John Ammon and Eliza Jane Brinkerhoff Mangum in Wattis, Emery County, Utah. She married Reid Austin on Feb. 26, 1943, in Price, Utah. Then on May 25, 1951, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Manti LDS Temple.
She attended schools in Mohrland, Hiawatha, and Carbon High School. During the war she picked boney for U.S. Fuel Company. She then worked at Confectionary Soda Fountain, and then worked as a clerk at Hiawatha Trading Co., Giacoletto Market, Woolworths, and George Poulos’ store in Price.
Phyllis was an active member of the LDS church and enjoyed serving as a teacher and in the presidencies in Primary, Relief Society, and the Young Women’s (MIA) program. She was a member of the International Daughters of Utah Pioneers and the Emery Company, Old Mill Camp. She also had an appreciation for the simple things in life and taught those she came in contact with to embrace life, reach out and care for others, and always give your best effort at whatever you do in life.
She crocheted baby quilts and afghans, and she enjoyed fishing and camping trips. But what she enjoyed most of all was serving an LDS mission in Texas and doing temple work for 12 years in the St. George LDS Temple.
Phyllis is survived by her sweetheart of 66 years, Reid Austin; one daughter, Doris Mitchell of Price; three granddaughters: Denice (Jim) Glines of Ferron, Jackie Mitchell of Salt Lake City, and Billie Ann (Dustin) Christiansen of Price; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Mary (John Charles) Stevenson and Mary’s former husband (Hyrum Earl) Hansen, and sister, Nina (Merrill George) Bearnson; and two brothers: Clifford (Elizabeth) Mangum and Dorral Edward (Lola) Mangum.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Ferron LDS Stake Center (555 South 400 West). There will be a viewing from 12:30-1:45 p.m. prior to the services at the church. Interment will be at the Price City Cemetery. Services are in the care of Fausett Mortuary.
